Only about 2% of wine production in Beaujolais is devoted to white wine. This must always be Chardonnay in order to comply with Appellation rules. Nevertheless, production can still achieve in the order of 2.5 million bottles per year. Mommessin, acclaimed makers of various red Beaujolais, presented us with a white to sample. We found it to be a very good chardonnay, indeed, perhaps in the mould of a southern Burgundy (which technically it is, anyway).
Soft and roundly textural, displaying generous flavours of buttery, nutty tropical fruit and poached quince, with a hint of spice. Generously mouth-filling and very complete. At this price, there’s no need to spend more money on indifferent white Burgundies. This will do nicely, thank you.
