Mencia was allegedly introduced to Bierzo by pilgrams on the Santiago de Compostela route. The grape thrives there, producing wines from bulk commercial styles to deep concentrated examples. The Salterio is at the good end of “commercial”, displaying the typical floral fragrance of Mencia, the vibrant juicy red fruit, fresh acidity and velvet texture common to the variety. It’s medium bodied, vital and versatile - and a pleasant change from the usual grape suspects.
