Some prefer reds which are deep in colour, obvious and big in flavour. Others, often the more adventurous types, are open to a variety of world wine styles. This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo provides an accurate introduction to a popular Italian wine style. It’s commercial in nature, and you may well graduate to more expensive examples, but, as an entree, this wine is most instructive. Note the medium weight and clear, bright colour. Savour the sour cherry, chinotto and dried herb aromas. Then, without too much ceremony, enjoy the crunchy, bright cherry flavours and consider, along the way, the cherry pip and dried herb seasoning as it meanders to a satisfyingly long finish. This style works well with Italian tomato-based meals. For many, this cheeky little red will transport you straight back to Italy.
