When the master distiller discovered 9 ‘rogue casks’ 1979 he saw an exciting opportunity to create something special. Hugging the coastline on the revered isle of Islay off the west coast of Scotland, Port Ellen has achieved legendary status amongst connoisseurs in the know with whiskies that are among the most sought after, with the magic and mystique growing with age since the distillery’s closure in 1983.
This release of Port Ellen 40 year old is said to have a nose of burnt orange citrus peel, mild smoke & delicate, grassy/herbal notes at cask strength. With the addition of a little water; roasted coffee, red fruit medley & crème caramel. A strong palate of campfire smoke, tobacco, leather & wood spice.
Only 1380 bottles available globally, making this release both the oldest & most limited from the distillery.
