Meet Josef Chromy Winemaker Yael Sandler

When Yael joined team Chromy for a vintage back in 2016, little did she know she was about to fall head over heels with all things Tasmanian – especially Chardonnay! A University of Adelaide graduate with a master’s in Oenology and a WSET Level 4 Diploma, Yael initially started her career in wine as a sommelier, however her passion for wine soon led her to explore the world of winemaking, where she honed her skills at some of the finest wineries across the globe, including Giaconda, Yarra Yering and Margalit in her home country of Israel. But it was Tasmania that captured her heart, and in late 2020, Yael joined the Josef Chromy team full time. Now, as winemaker, Yael is continuously innovating and experimenting with new techniques to create exceptional cool-climate wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Leading the Standard for Sustainability

Sustainability is deeply ingrained in everything at Josef Chromy – from the vineyard to the winery and restaurant kitchen. In the winery, initiatives like a 100kW solar power system, advanced wastewater treatment, and extensive composting practices - where grape marc and other by-products from the winery are transformed into nutrient-rich compost and put back into the soil - allow Josef Chromy to strive towards the best practices in sustainable wine production as set out by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA).
