About Chapel Hill
The award-winning Chapel Hill winery takes its name from an iconic ironstone chapel nestled in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Serving as the community's heart for a century until its closure in 1965, the chapel found new purpose in 1972 when Adelaide professor Tom Nelson transformed it into a winery.
Perched on the side of the Onkaparinga Gorge, Chapel Hill's picturesque vineyard boasts elevation, ancient rocks, contoured plantings and moderating sea breezes. Chapel Hill is renowned for its strong focus on sustainable practices and the development of expressive McLaren Vale and single vineyard styles, which has been achieved through respect for the land, the vines, nature and people. National and regional wine show recognition also highlight Chapel Hill’s leading reputation for authenticity and quality.
In 2024, Chapel Hill marked their 50th vintage, cementing their reputation as one of McLaren Vale's most enduring and respected wine producers.
Meet The Chapel Hill Team
There are few wineries in Australia that have such a rich history, are located in such breathtakingly beautiful surroundings, and have experienced as much success and acclaim as Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill has been led by the Chief Winemaker Michael Fragos since 2004. Success came early for Michael when he was awarded ‘world’s best winemaker’ at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London in 2007.
Michael was then joined by Viticulturist Rachel Steer, who has great passion for sustainable farming practices. As a team they have enjoyed continual success with their wines being recognised with international wine show awards and ongoing appreciation from the influential wine media. The combined grape growing and winemaking philosophies continue to evolve, seeing Chapel Hill become one of the most respected and trusted wineries in McLaren Vale.
Sustainability
A certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, Chapel Hill is a leading practitioner of sustainable practices in McLaren Vale.
