Daiquiri cocktail recipe

This classic recipe makes the simplest – and tastiest – cocktail in town.

About the cocktail

Unlike the frozen, fruity concoctions that come garnished with a strawberry or a cocktail umbrella, the original Daiquiri recipe calls for just three ingredients – white rum, lime juice and sugar syrup – to make an elegant, refined and classic sweet-sour cocktail.

This OG version of the Daiquiri was created by Jennings Cox, an American engineer based in Cuba, who received a ration of local Cuban rum on top of his salary. As the story goes, the engineer ran out of gin while entertaining one night and had to serve his guests rum mixed with lime juice and sugar. Fortunately for us, the delicious result was the invention of the Daiquiri. It's a perfectly refreshing combination of sour and sweet, with the flavoursome white rum packing an enjoyable punch that's mellowed by the sugar and lime.

The Daiquiri’s most famous fan has to be American novelist Ernest Hemingway, who purportedly discovered it at his favourite Cuban haunt – El Floridita in Havana. Because of his fondness for the cocktail, the bar invented a version in his name, the Hemingway Daiquiri, which sees the addition of 15mL each of grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur. While we’re on the topic of famous faces, it’s said that JFK was also partial to a Frozen Daiquiri.

Daiquiri cocktail ingredients

  • 50mL white rum
  • 25mL lime juice
  • 10mL sugar syrup
  • Garnish: lime wheel

Daiquiri cocktail method

  1. Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice
  2. Shake vigorously
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass – we love it in a coupe
  4. Garnish with a lime wheel

Dan’s top tips

The Hemingway isn’t the only variation on the Daiquiri’s simple rum, citrus and sugar template. Just a few extra ingredients are all it takes for the cocktail to shape-shift into a Cable Car or a Piña Colada, then you've also got a whole host of Frozen Daiquiri options, including the Banana Daiquiri.

If you’re planning on serving Daiquiris at a dinner party, feel free to make up a premix of sugar and rum before they arrive. It's best, however, to use freshly squeezed lime juice rather than leave the juice sitting in alcohol while you wait for everyone to arrive.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
  1. What’s the best rum for a Daiquiri and where can I get it?
The best rum for a Daiquiri is the one you like most, but with that said, we’re big fans of experimenting, and trial and error at Dan’s Daily. We’ve used white rum, so try your favourite, but you can also try a spiced rum or coconut rum or even an aged rum. You can find all of them at Dan Murphy's.

  2. What Australian twists work in a Daiquiri?
We love a Mango Daiquiri, especially when the weather is warm and it’s mango season. You can also have a go at a Pavlova Daiquiri. Muddle some strawberries and passionfruit with sugar, then you’ll need lime juice, a touch of vanilla and, of course, white rum.

  3. What foods goes really well with Daiquiri cocktail?
Try serving a Daiquiri with fresh seafood – think oysters, prawns and scallops – as the tart, zesty kick that comes from the Daiquiri makes the perfect combo.
