"Cool, wet weather leading up to the 2012 vintage hampered the growing season, yet there were many lovely wines made, particularly the early-ripening merlot wines of St Émilion and Pomerol. Although the cabernet-sauvignon dominant Left Bank was variable, there were still some impressive results. Bottle age acquired in Dan Murphy’s temperature-controlled cellar has given these wines extra richness and volume, and they're great value as they were purchased with a strong Australian dollar against the euro. With the escalating prices seen at the 2018 en primeur (futures) release, these bottles offer a Grand Cru Classe experience at a realistic price."

"Burgundy has long set the benchmark for fine chardonnay and pinot noir. With more than 100 appellations covering a 120km strip of north-eastern France, its styles can span the full flavour spectrum of ethereal and powerful, zesty and fruity, depending on the site. In Burgundy's extended southerly reaches, the Beaujolais region is enjoying a revival thanks to a renewed interest in gamay. Sommeliers and wine professionals around the world praise its Crus for producing the very best expression of the varietal."

"Sauvignon blanc is the Loire Valley’s premier white grape. Like Chablis’ unique style of chardonnay, few sauvignon blancs possess the concentration as those of the Loire, and rarely with their signature minerality and gunflint notes. There probably isn’t a wine bar in Paris without a Sancerre on the list – it is considered the pinnacle, but there’s plenty to explore from neighbouring regions, which is why I’ve chosen three very different wines for you to try."

"Wine has been made in the Rhône Valley for more than 2000 years. The cooler northern Rhône is the birthplace of shiraz (or syrah, as it’s known in France) and the southern Rhône is much larger, with a warmer Mediterranean climate – perfect conditions for the juicy grenache, syrah and mourvèdre blends the region is famous for. I feel like I’m at home when I’m in the Rhône Valley, which is why I gravitate toward these wines. Just like the villages of the region, they are vibrant and full of life."
