So, you want to impress without dipping into your savings? We've got you.

If there’s one good thing to come out of being in and out of lockdowns for the past two years, it’s that most of us now consider ourselves budding home cooks. We slayed the sourdough. We brought our banana bread A-game. And don’t get us started on the hours we spent rolling handmade pasta across our kitchen benches. It was the best of times (for home cooking), it was the worst of times (for our social lives). Since we’ve returned to normality, the joy of getting creative in the kitchen is still there – but now we can invite all our mates over and let them enjoy our hard work. If you’re keen to entertain, but don’t want to spend up big while doing so – we’ve got three meal ideas and drink pairings that are sure to impress while keeping the budget low. Serving suggestion: three of your nearest and dearest.
Borsao Viña Borgia Garnacha Organico

1. A $14 wine with DIY chicken tacos

Who doesn’t love getting around a taco? They’re a great choice when you’re entertaining. The trick is to fire up the BBQ and get those tortillas heated to perfection and that chicken extra smokey before you set up a build-your-own-taco station in the kitchen. If chicken isn’t your thing, you could try vegan mince or fish – whatever floats your boat! Throw some slaw together, maybe some corn (we can’t imagine a more beautiful thing), and don’t forget the salsa and plenty of queso for good measure. When you sit down to enjoy this tasty meal, crack a bottle of Borsao Viña Borgia Garnacha Organico. Try serving it chilled – it’s light, fresh, textural and perfect for tacos.

2. A $23 pack of premix with veggie Pad Thai

Save some cash by swapping the Friday night takeaway Pad Thai for an at-home job. A little tofu, lime, bean sprouts and coriander (if you’re so inclined) make the perfect base for this dish. Plus, whipping out a wok and throwing it all together in front of your pals will reconfirm your title as ‘the only friend in the group who knows how to work a wok’. A nice match for this tasty number is Rey Loco Tequila Lime & Soda. It’s a perfectly blended and balanced combination of lime and soda with a refreshing, sparkling, slightly sweet, citrus tequila taste. Think of it as a Margarita with only 99 calories – and a great drink to enjoy as you devour your steaming hot Pad Thai.

3. A $50 magnum with an epic pasta salad

As the weather slowly starts to warm up, it’s time to finesse your salad-making skills; you know those BBQ invites will start rolling in and it pays to be ready! An epic pasta salad is the unsung hero of a dinner party spread, and it’s surprisingly easy (and cost-effective) to make. Think light, fresh ingredients that reside in your fridge crisper most of the time. You can go creamy or keep it lemony – and whatever you do, don’t hold back on the cherry tomatoes. We think a big old Miraval Studio Rosé Magnum is the perfect accompaniment to this dish – especially if you’re hosting a late lunch in the sun on a Saturday. $50 might not sound like a budget wine, but at 1.5L a magnum is a great option if you’re serving up dinner for a group. Fun fact about Miraval Studio’s name: In 1977, jazz musician and owner of the estate at the time Jacques Loussier built a recording studio at Miraval where he hosted the likes of Pink Floyd, The Cure, AC/DC and Sting. So maybe spin The Dark Side of the Moon on the record player while you enjoy a glass of this fabulous pink drop.
