Want half the alcohol with all the flavour? We’ve got you.

There is now so much choice when it comes to alcoholic drinks that some don’t even have alcohol in them anymore. In addition to all the wild flavours and creations that continue to roll out across the beer, wine and spirits world, we’re truly indulged with zero%* alcohol alternatives. And now, proving there is quite literally a wine for every occasion, we’re seeing a heap of new releases with around half the alcohol of traditional drops. It’s no secret that booze plays a big role in contributing all that delicious flavour, texture and body we love in wine, so these new vinos are striking a very happy medium and ticking all the boxes. Long lunches with mates just got a whole lot better.

These lighter-in-alcohol wines aren’t just an afterthought, either. As Pepperjack chief winemaker Richard Mattner says, it took them a long time to nail their new 7% ABV Pepperjack Shiraz Mid Strength. How did they do it? Richard explains they used vacuum distillation to reduce their ever-popular shiraz’s ABV to 0%, and then blended the dealcoholised components with full-strength parcels in extensive trials. “We tried it at many different alcohol percentages, and 7% ABV was the one that most resembled our Pepperjack Shiraz. It was about finding that sweet spot,” he says.

Richard says he never thought he’d be putting his blending skills to the test to create lighter-in-alcohol wine, but with so many people now looking to drink more responsibly, it’s been an important long-term project for the team. And it’s clear they’re not the only ones, judging by these brand-new releases below.

1. Pepperjack Shiraz Mid Strength

This new mid-strength red has been made to reflect everything that’s so well-loved about the classic Pepperjack Shiraz. For chief winemaker Richard Mattner, that means this wine had to be soft and plush with vibrant fruit flavours. “The Shiraz Mid Strength has a little more red fruits, but there are still blue and black fruit notes, and it’s full of character,” he says. At 7% ABV rather than 14.5%, it presents an excellent alternative for any occasion. “It’s been getting a great response in our cellar door and it’s proving really popular.”

2. McGuigan MID Red Blend

McGuigan has been a household name in Australian wine for decades, and after showing us how well zero%* alcohol wines can be done with their entire Zero Alcohol range, they’ve now turned their hand to lighter-in-alcohol drops with the MID Red Blend. What can you expect from it? Here’s a classic red with bright fruit flavours of spicy plum, cherry and blackberry. It’s off-dry, which gives it a hint of sweetness, and it’s well-balanced with a smooth finish. It’s also versatile and will pair well with a range of dishes, including anything with a tomato-based sauce. Hello pizza and pasta!

3. Grant Burge Mid Strength Ink Shiraz

Even with an ABV of 7%, Grant Burge’s new Mid Strength Ink Shiraz is still an excellent representation of its home region of the Barossa Valley. This wine is full of raspberry, black cherry and dark chocolate flavours (yum!), all showing in a bold and generous style – no mean feat for a wine with half the alcohol content of a traditional shiraz. It makes an exciting new addition to Grant Burge’s top-selling Ink range, which is made up of dense, full-bodied and opulent wines.
4. Allevio Naturally Lighter Pinot Noir Having already found a loyal following for their lighter-in-alcohol sauvignon blanc – it has an ABV of 9.5% – the team at Allevio know a thing or two about getting these wines right. Now, their new release of the Naturally Lighter Pinot Noir adds a great red wine to their collection, showcasing New Zealand’s Marlborough region beautifully. Made with grapes grown using sustainable practices, the Allevio delivers flavours of red berries and cherries, which bring a juicy freshness to this wine, as well as a touch of fruit sweetness.
