Welcome to the changing world of wine where cans are king and pouches are plentiful.

Have you ever looked at a bottle of wine and wondered why it’s shaped like that? Or who decided that 750mL was the ideal size for a standard bottle? The wine bottles that we know today have basically been the same since the 1800s. But what worked for someone 200 years ago doesn’t necessarily mesh with my busy on-the-go, express delivery addicted, instant gratification-based lifestyle.

When it comes to convenience a regular wine bottle isn’t always the best fit. Sometimes I want to go to the park and drink wine out of a can – because it’s easier. And sometimes I want to pour all of my dinner party guests a glass of red out of a giant bag. You know why? Because it’s easier.

A good wine is a good wine, no matter what form it comes in – and even the snobbiest of wine snobs can’t argue with that. Whether you’re pouring from a mini, half-bottle, can, or even a pouch, all that matters is that you’re enjoying a top-notch drop.

So whether you’re looking for an easy hosting wine, something to take to a camping festival, or just a cheeky single glass, there’s a wine in some form that’ll suit every situation. Below, you’ll find our picks for when you need to think outside of the box (or should we say bottle).

Best for your next barbecue or dinner party: Cupio Pinot Noir Pouch 1.5L & Cupio Pinot Rose Pouch 1.5L

Don’t even think about using the G word to describe Cupio’s delicious and uber convenient wine pouches. They might come in a bag, but they’re a far cry from the goon bags of your uni days.  These 1.5L bagnums (think magnum, but in a bag!) are filled with the exact same quality wine as Cupio’s bottled range, just cleverly repackaged for sharing. The dry Provence-style Rosé and delicately smooth Pinot Noir are perfectly at home during your next barbecue or dinner party surrounded by friends. The best part? The pouch won’t take up all of your fridge or esky real estate and once opened they’ll stay fresh for upto 30 days.

Best for longevity: Isabel Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 375mL

How many times have you been forced to open a full bottle of wine when all you wanted was a single glass? Next thing you’re stuck with the leftovers and the clock ticking on how long it’ll stay drinkable. (Hint: it’s roughly five days for white). This is where half-bottles like Isabel Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc come in handy. The smaller bottle size leaves way less room for oxygenation after opening. And that means an open half bottle will stay fresher for longer compared to a full-size bottle.

Best for picnics: Belle Année by Mirabeau French Rosé 250mL

Your new favourite picnic companion has got to be this rosé in a can. Yes, a can. We know what you’re thinking – how good can a rosé in a can be? And the answer is: just as good as one from a bottle but way more convenient. The delightfully pale pink Belle Année by Mirabeau is a dry French rosé with a delicious freshness that channels the Mediterranean. Which is exactly why it’s best enjoyed al fresco, in the park or wherever the sun is shining.

Best for saving bubbles: Minchinbury Blush Rose Cuvee 200mL

The saddest thing that can happen to sparkling wine is bubble loss. Even with a proper sparkling wine stopper an open bottle will lose its fizz after a day – maybe two, if you’re lucky. Next time you’re in the mood for a cheeky glass of sparkling, try opening a single serve mini bottle like Minchinbury Blush Rose Cuvee instead. The 200mL serving size is perfect for when you only want a single glass or if you’re in the mood to try a few different wines without committing to a full-size bottle. And did we mention that you get to hear the satisfying cork pop every time?

Best for camping, music festivals, or any no-glass event: Tread Softly Prosecco 250mL

The BYO rules might say “no glass” but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo your favourite sparkling wine. That’s right, the convenience of canned wine has come to save the day once again. You just can’t beat the ease and transportability of Tread Softly’s fresh and crisp Prosecco in a can. Throw a four pack in your esky and you’re good to go! Plus, the aluminium packaging means you can chill the wine quickly and serve it at an ideal temperature, which for sparkling wine is around 6–8 degrees celsius.
