Watchlist: The best house parties on film and cracking drinks to match

For the nights you don’t feel up to going out (or weren’t invited), these movies and drinks are all you need.

It’s no coincidence that some of the most iconic comedies ever made revolve around parties – they’re eminently rewatchable, funny enough to keep the good vibes rolling, engaging enough to keep people interested but, crucially, not so complicated that you can’t duck in and out at your own choosing. Just like a good party, really. And because there are few pleasures in life quite like crashing on the couch in front of a film you already know will leave you in stitches, they’re ideal for quiet nights in. Or, may we suggest, next time you’re hosting a fiesta yourself, throw one of these on a projector in the background for excellent moving decor.

Whether you’re throwing back to the house parties of yesteryear, something a little more intimate, or settling down for a chilled Friday night, a perfect premix remains the quintessential way to channel the party spirit as you watch. Consider these pairings for the best night out (or in) you’ve ever had.

1. American Pie and an Australiana classic

Arriving at the tail-end of the ’90s, American Pie is one of the most hilarious and, for a certain subset of millennials, nostalgic films ever made. Wade through the occasionally awful acting and nightmarish ’90s fashion, and it’s also one of the most endearing in its own awkward and occasionally disgusting way. This is why we’re pairing it with Hard Rated: the alcoholic remix of a classic pub squash that’s setting the world alight right now. Pour it into a red cup for extra on-theme points (a reusable one – disposable plastic is so ’90s).

2. Superbad and an extremely noughties premix

Superbad isn’t just, in this writer’s humble opinion, one of the funniest films ever made – it’s also a perfect snapshot of the kind of party culture that so many late-stage millennials grew up in – and the desperate lengths we’d go to just to get an invite. It brings memories rushing back of emotional angst and the smell of cheap body spray to anyone who watches it. We think it’s a Vodka Cruiser kind of movie, and we can’t go past this brand new Black Cherry Cola flavour.

3. National Lampoon’s Animal House and the party drink of the moment

Animal House is the grandaddy of party films: the spiritual ancestor to a generation of coming-of-age party films that followed. As such, it’s easy to imagine that if it were remade today, a drink with the rambunctious spirit of Suntory’s new -196 Double Peach would probably feature prominently throughout. After all, whether in Japan or Down Under, it’s hard to think of a premix that is more worthy  of a cameo on those unforgettable nights. If you were a fan of the Lemon or Grape, you’ll love sipping on this newness while you savour John Belushi at his finest.

4. Game Night and the party drink of the moment

There comes a time when the game night comes to replace the house party – so much so they made a killer comedy about it. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star in this outrageously funny game night turned kidnapping – seriously, if you haven’t seen it, go put it on now. But instead of leaning into your rapidly vanishing party days and pouring yourself a whisky on the rocks, crack into Archie Rose’s excellent new Whisky and Dry Ginger Beer. Part of its increasingly popular line of bougie premixes, it’s a combo of premium ginger beer and their double malt whisky. It fits the bill perfectly, whether you’re settling down to a board game or chilling out in front of the movie – or both.

5. Easy A and a thoroughly grown-up favouriteLed by a star-making performance from now two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone and, of course, the enduring charm of Stanley Tucci, Easy A turned the tropes of ’90s and ’00s high school coming-of-age films on their head. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter, this movie is the quintessential PSA on why gossiping is wrong (and why Emma Stone will always be one of our faves). It’s simply smarter and more sensitive than the party films that came before it, while still being riotously funny – quite like this new drink that's hot off the press (you'll find it in stores shortly). Double Low-Sugar Blackcurrant Cruiser is every bit as delicious as its regular counterparts, but far wiser with its 65% less sugar. Keep an eye out for this one when it hits shelves in a few weeks.
