Gin, vodka, whisky (from Australia, Scotland and Ireland) – see who scored the coveted Double Gold Medal at this year’s World Spirits Competition.

Did you know that the spirits industry has its own version of The Oscars? Each year a panel of 70 international experts gather in San Francisco for the World Spirits Competition – an event that’s often described as “The Oscars of alcohol”. We admit there’s a lot less ballgowns and sunglasses worn inside, but it is one of the spirit industry's highest honours.

The World Spirits Competition is the oldest and longest running of its kind. Across two weeks the judges sample over 5,000 different spirits from around the world in a blind tasting – the same rigorous method that we use for our own Decoded Spirits Awards.

One of the highest awards – and hardest to win – in the competition is the coveted Double Gold medal. The only way to score a Double Gold is to have every single judge on the panel deem a spirit as worthy of gold – and with so many judges, that’s no easy feat.

This year’s awards were held in April with a number of Aussies standing on the podium alongside some of our international favourites. Below, we’re shining a spotlight on a few of this year’s Double Gold medal winners, the delicious spirits which judges unanimously loved.

1. 23rd Street Distillery Australian Vodka

South Australian distillery 23rd Street blew some big international names out the water with their Australian Vodka at this year’s awards. And it’s no surprise considering the time and quality that goes into their craft from the very start. 23rd Street takes only the finest Australian sugarcane molasses and small batch ferments it with rain water. From there, only the softest spirit cuts are distilled in copper before being filtered through charcoal. The result is a crystal clear vodka that’s silky smooth, with a touch of sweetness thanks to its sugarcane beginnings.

2. Adelaide Hills Distillery 78 Degrees Sunset Gin

Winemaker Sacha La Forgia founded Adelaide Hills Distillery in 2014 after a stopover at an Italian grappa distillery unearthed his talent for crafting spirits. Over the years Sacha’s distilled a wide range of products, but it was gin that came first. At this year's World Spirits Competition it was the label’s Sunset Gin which judges couldn’t get enough of. The rose-coloured spirit is produced in small batches utilising grape spirit that’s vapour distilled to protect the delicate flavours. Mix it with Mediterranean Tonic, garnish with strawberries and thyme and serve it as the same suggests – at sunset.

3. Smokehead High Voltage Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Just in case the name and skull featured on the bottle weren’t enough of a hint, trust us when we say this single malt from Smokehead is seriously intense. It’s ironic that its tagline is “Not for Everyone” when the judges at this year’s awards loved it unanimously. If you’re a fan of big, bold, peaty, smokey, seaweedy whiskies then you’ll love the High Voltage Islay Single Malt too. Sip it neat on your first try to take in the full assault of the flavours. But on your next pour, try mixing it with ginger beer and lemon juice for a drink that’ll warm your very soul.

4. Starward Fortis Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky

Starward have made a name for themselves around the world by taking Melbourne’s food-obsessed attitude and channelling it into flavourful whisky. Fortis (which fittingly means bold in Latin) is one of the label’s highest proof bottles and yet it remains grounded and balanced thanks to Starward’s signature smoothness. As an Australian single malt whisky, it’s a unique celebration of both local ingredients and the Barossa Valley-sourced red wine barrels that it’s matured in. Serve it neat to enjoy the approachable velvety mouthfeel and toasty oak flavours.

5. Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey

This single malt Irish whiskey from Teeling is a total gamechanger. To add a unique depth of character and flavour, it consists of aged malt whiskey up to 23 years’ old that’s been matured in five different wine casks: sherry, port, madeira, white burgundy and cabernet sauvignon. It’s a combination of cask maturation techniques that’s never been done before in Irish whiskey, so it’s no surprise the World Spirits Competition awarded it Double Gold. Truly innovative and bursting with personality, it’s the perfect drop for a sit, sip and swirl.
