Whether you like it sweet or spicy, one thing’s for sure – this thirst-quenching brew is the drink of the summer.

We’re calling it: this summer is the summer of ginger beer. In the last year the variety of ginger beers has exploded as the ultra-refreshing brew experienced a boom in popularity. It’s really no surprise that ginger beer is enjoying a moment in the sun when its spicy, exotic, and thirst-quenching nature make it the ideal summer sip.

The first thing you need to know about ginger beer is that it’s not actually beer. Technically it’s closer to cider in the way that it’s brewed, by naturally fermenting ginger. Generally there are two camps when it comes to ginger beer: those that prefer their brew sweet and subtle, and those that like it with wallops of spice. But no matter which side of the fence you find yourself on, there’s now a whole world of gingery brews for you to explore.

From sweet to spicy, plus a few intriguing twists in between, we’ve picked out six of our favourite ginger beers to whet your whistle this summer. Summer and beer go hand in hand. But summer and ginger beer? Well that’s a match made in heaven.

Amply’s Hard Ginger Beer

Amply’s is all about amplifying flavour — and boy does their hard ginger beer prove it. Cracking open a can of Amply’s is like lighting the fuse on a ginger bomb. The explosive ginger taste will knock your socks off, but without sacrificing smoothness. This is the best choice for lovers of spice who still want some sweetness and don’t want to compromise on refreshment. As a cloudy style ginger beer, it’s got flavour so big you can see it.

Ginger Resistance Cinnamon & Lime Ginger Beer

To put it simply, Ginger Resistance are ginger experts. They know ginger and they know the many ways you can utilise and accentuate its flavour. One of the best examples of this is in their Cinnamon & Lime Ginger Beer where they’ve added an aromatic and refreshing twist to the classic. The touch of cinnamon helps to turn up the ginger flavour while the citrusy lime adds freshness and balance. Pour it over ice, throw in a wedge of lime and you’ll swear you’re drinking an elaborate cocktail.

Zeffer Cider Alcoholic Ginger Beer

Zeffer is a small, independent cidery nestled between the hills and orchards of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Over the last couple of years they’ve developed somewhat of a cult following for their award-winning cider and ginger beer that’s made from the very best ingredients. To make their zingy Cider Alcoholic Ginger Beer they mix fermented ginger root with their famous freshly crushed apple cider to create a uniquely thirst-quenching brew. Now you don’t have to choose between a cider or a ginger beer, you can have the best of both worlds.
