Have a sip, take a bite and be transported to a far-off destination.

Australians might be renowned for our love of beer but it turns out most of the world loves a cold one just as much as we do. Did you know that beer is the third most consumed beverage in the world? And a world full of beer lovers means a world full of beer styles. Across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and everywhere in between, different regions have their own unique styles of brewing. You could spend a lifetime travelling the world to taste every beer and still only scratch the surface.

Below we’ve highlighted three of our favourite international brews and some takeaway options that’ll match them perfectly. Have a sip, take a bite and be transported to a far-off destination.

Mack Isbjørn Lager with fish and chips

Country: Norway

This Norweigan lager is created in the northernmost brewery in the world using pure Arctic water. The pristine waters are also renowned for being home to some of the world’s very best seafood — and this crisp icy-cold lager is perfect to accompany a range of fish dishes.

Scandinavian food is hard to comeby on takeaway menus in Australia, so your best option is to dial up the local fish and chip shop for some grilled salmon. Bonus points if you add in a side of fresh oysters or cooked shellfish to share with friends.

Korudo Japanese Lager and Monsuta Japanese Lager with a bento box

Country: Japan

Japan has a reputation for deliciously crisp and clean flavoured pale lagers. The versatility of the style means they’re well suited to both hot summer days and chilly winter evenings. No matter what the weather, the best way to enjoy Japanese beer is with lots of food.

In Japan the bento box is a staple, a lunchbox-style container featuring small portions of many different dishes. The refreshing Korudo lager pairs well with the common bento side dishes like edamame beans, small sushi rolls, and dumplings. While the bold Monsuta lager is a treat with the bento’s crispy fried dishes like chicken karaage or pork tonkatsu.

Wakachangi Lager with a classic beef burger

Country: New Zealand

Wakachangi Lager is a great beer (with an even greater label) from our mates across the ditch. It’s a no-nonsense, easy drinking brew that’ll be a hit with everyone at your next barbecue. Speaking of meat, there’s no better way to enjoy this beer than with a juicy beef burger. If you're taking advantage of the travel bubble to visit our Kiwi mates you'll no doubt be lining up at cult-favourite Queenstown burger joint Fergburger. The rest of us back home can take some inspiration and order up a beef burger with lettuce, tomato, red onion, aioli, and tomato relish from our local spot. While we can’t guarantee the burger will be as good as the one that Queenstown tourists spend an hour in line for, we can assure you the beer will match it perfectly.
