Friends holding low-carb beers in the sunshine

If that carb count puts you off beer, these new brews are here to change everything up.

Ah, beer – liquid bread. Who doesn’t love a schooey of carby, filling brew? Well, plenty of people, actually. Whether the carbs in beer have been enough to put you off this beverage entirely, or you’re just looking to switch your regular brew to something lighter, we’ve got good news. There’s actually a heap of really solid no- and low-carb beer options on the market, including these five bottles that are brand new to the Dan Murphy’s shelves.

Hot tip: from 4 September to 9 October, My Dan’s members can try any of these for just $3 a bottle at any Dan’s store*. Let’s get stuck in.

1. Bryon Bay Ultra Zero Carb

You’ve heard of Byron Bay (lifestyles of the rich and famous hippies), you may have even heard of Byron Bay Brewery, but have you heard about their new zero-carb beer – Byron Bay Ultra Zero Carb? No? Well, let us introduce you. A super light-bodied, mid-strength lager that pours pale gold, this ingenious easy drinker is brewed with zero carbs – all pale malts and super subtle citrus hop. As you can imagine, this is a lighter style of lager (only 73 calories, for anyone counting) and comes in at 0.9 standard drinks, but still very refreshing and smooth. Come summer or even post-sporting event, we see this little number being mucho popular.

2. Travla Mid-Strength Ultra Low Carb Lager

What do Vikings, the Australian bush and underwear models have in common? Travis Fimmel. The Australian actor, famous for playing Ragnar Lothbrok in the TV show Vikings and for those early 2000s Calvin Klein ads, got together with a few of his farm boy mates to create Travla. And now, this true-blue, hard-yakka brew has a Mid-Strength Ultra Low Carb version. Big on flavour, soft on the old tum-tum. Brewed with all Australian ingredients, it’s super crisp, has some mild fruitiness, but also that great beery, smooth bitterness. It’s a real clever can, with 3.5% and 89 calories. What a win!

3. XXXX Ultra Zero Carb

XXXX with zero carbs? Can you believe it? We can, and it’s bloody good. For those XXXX diehards (we know you’re out there) give this a red hot crack. Sitting at around 79 calories per bottle, this little overachiever is not just zero carb but also lower ABV (at 3.8% – or one standard drink), which is perf for a Sunday arvo, if you ask us. Crisp, refreshing and sessionable, XXXX Ultra Zero Carb is low in bitterness and high in freshness. It’s perfect as an after-surf bevvie, a just-after-you’ve-mowed-the-lawn cool-down or an easy-drinking barbie companion.

4. Hahn Ultra Zero Carb

Hahn’s really put in some elbow grease for this little carbless wonder. Using the most advanced technologies currently available, they’ve managed to slowly pry out the carbs in this Ultra Zero Carb by using longer brewing methods and other novel ingredients (you keep your secrets then). Best of all? Aside from the fact that it’s 87 calories per bottle, it still tastes like a damn good Hanh original: crisp, smooth and delicious. This one comes in at a more standard 4.2% ABV.

5. Carlton Dry Ultra Low-Carb

G’day, Carlton! What delicious new beer do you have for us today? Answer: Carlton Dry Ultra Low Carb. Super light (like most of the beers on this list – go figure), full strength (4.2% ABV) but only 1g of carbs and 86 calories. How do they do it? If you’re looking for a lighter beer that still has that great depth of flavour, this should be your go-to. Just a fab beer if you’re keeping your eye on what you’re drinking.
