Intrigued by dark spirits, but not sold on the taste? Have a crack at these flavoured dark liquors.

Not everyone enjoys brown liquor. Scotch, whiskey, bourbon and dark rums are all very much acquired tastes and can be quite polarising. But if you’d like to dip a toe into the world of dark spirits, fear not – we have some easier-drinking options to whet your whistle. From funky-flavoured whiskies to twists on the classics, there’s a little something for anyone and everyone (who’s willing, that is).

But first, what is a dark spirit, and why does it look like that? Well, all spirits start out clear. It’s the maturing process and type of cask that changes the colour. For example, a whisky with a reddish-mahogany hue has probably been aged in European oak (most often sherry-seasoned casks). The cask imparts colour to the spirit over time. Funky, huh? As for what spirits we class as dark? It’s pretty much as simple as looking at the colour of the liquid – think whisky, rum, bourbon and some liqueurs.

Now that we know a bit about dark liquor, let’s have a squiz at five of our new flavoured dark spirits below.

A bottle of Jameson Orange Whiskey

1. Jameson Orange

Jameson is a classic for a reason, but for people who don’t love the taste of whiskey, it can be a bit of a tricky sipper. If you’ve already written it off, don’t be too quick to discount this twist on a classic. You’ve got the beautifully smooth, triple-distilled base that is Jameson whiskey, but with the added zestiness of fruity oranges. It’s a real summer sipper and super well-balanced. As you’d expect, you get a lot of juicy orange fruits, peel and whiskey undertones on the nose. While in the mouth, it's delicate, with very distinct notes of orange zest and a touch of spicy, nutty sweet vanilla. You can drink it by itself with a hit of ice but we reckon it goes great in a Highball or mixed with some lemonade over ice.

2. Plantation Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Dark Original Rum

Think you don't like rum? Think again. We're about to blow your mind. Introducing Plantation Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum. This guy is the real deal and super fancy, to boot. Made from 100% naturally macerated pineapple and double-matured Trinidad rum, this is the dark rum for all those who don’t like dark rum. On the nose, we get rich smoky notes and delish tropical fruits like pineapple and citrus peels finished with just the right amount of clove. On the tongue, it’s all ripe banana, yummy pineapple, and spices finished with a warm smokiness. It’s won a good amount of awards and easily sippable on its own, but for a pineapple-y twist, have a go mixing it in a few of your fave rum cocktails (we love it in the Mojito and Pina Colada).

3. Ole Smoky Mango Habanero American Whiskey

Mango and spice just go together. It’s one of those unexplainable, stupid tasty things. So, of course, Ole Smoky had to capitalise on it by combining them in a deliciously drinkable whiskey. The ripe mango flavours are tightened up with spicy habanero peppers to give the drink a zippy finish. It’s fruity, sweet and absolutely perf for mixing. Mango Habanero Margs, anyone?

4. Ole Smoky Tennessee Cinnamon Liqueur

You know cinnamon scrolls or what the Americans call cinnabuns? Yeah, well picture that but in whiskey form. That’s right – a drinkable cinnamon scroll. How good! So, what Ole Smoky has done (thank you!) is combine 70-proof whiskey and everyone’s favourite spice to create this delicious, warming liquor. While you can sip it by itself, you’re gonna get the most out of this drop by blending it in a cocktail. We recommend swirling it into an Old Fashioned to better appreciate those cinnamon flavours.

5. Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey

Peanut butter and whiskey? You must be off your nutter (get it?). But in all seriousness, this is one profoundly delicious liqueur. Obviously, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but boy, is this stuff drinkable. Take a whiff and you’re getting roasted peanuts, caramel and chocolate aromas – mmmm! It’s got that rich peanut butter taste to it, as well as subtle butterscotch, caramel and hazelnut flavours. You can enjoy this beauty neat, over good ice, or even shaken up in a peanut buttery, whiskey twist on the Espresso Martini.
