Australia’s princess of pop tells us all about her latest wines, touring and favourite ways to host.
Yes, that’s right. If you’ve been shopping at Dan’s, you may be familiar with Kylie’s Signature Rosé, Prosecco Rosé and the Prosecco DOC, but the line-up has just gained another hit (well, two actually) because Kylie has dropped a 0% Sparkling Rosé and a 0% Sparkling Blanc. Much like her discography, Kylie’s wines are for everyone, so when thinking about what was next, it was important to her that everyone could enjoy these sparkling wines. If you aren’t up to speed on your Kylie trivia (tsk, tsk), Kylie Minogue Wines launched in 2020, and in just five years, they’ve sold more than 22 million bottles.
We chatted with Kylie (screaming!) about the process of making non-alc wines, touring the world and her hot tips for hosting.
- Q.Congratulations on the launch of your Kylie Minogue 0% Sparkling Rosé and Kylie Minogue 0% Sparkling Blanc into Dan’s. What was the driver behind expanding into the zero%* category?
“Thank you! I am so thrilled with the reception to Kylie Minogue Wines in Australia, and as an advocate for responsible and moderate drinking, it was so important to offer an incredible zero%* sparkling as part of the portfolio.
Wine is such a historical part of our gatherings and celebrations, romantic evenings and after-work wind-downs. I talk about this a lot with all my wines, and it is a large part of why I started my wine venture – the ‘experience’ of wine. The importance of the moment, whether it’s for yourself or sharing it with others, and this can still be cherished with a non-alcoholic wine.
When we launched the Kylie 0% Sparkling Rosé in the UK, we knew health and wellbeing was becoming more and more important in people's lives, and so many of us are leaning in to more self-care. I remember saying with absolute conviction that we needed a zero%* in the range and then the question was… how? Non-alcoholic wine didn’t have a great reputation so we set about making it a reality.”
- Q.We’re so lucky that the low- and no-alcohol category continues to expand (and just keeps getting better!), but your new sparklings are made differently to a lot of non-alc wines. Tell us about the process.
“Many non-alcoholic wines are dealcoholised, and while this process does remove the alcohol from the wine, it usually also strips the fruit flavour and textures that we enjoy. To counteract the ‘watery’ taste this can give, producers often add sugar to the wine, which makes it incredibly sweet and lacking in structure. Our zero%* sparkling rosé is made very differently – we start with premium grapes that are fermented with good bacteria, rather than yeast. Leaving out the yeast means alcohol is not created while the grapes are fermenting, then to add to the flavour and structure of the wine, we also infuse the wine with hand-selected teas.”
- Q.There are currently 10 wines under the Kylie Minogue label with a common theme of rosé. What do you love about it, and how did these wines come about?
“There’s nothing better than a glass of cold rosé on a summer day. My eyes were really opened to the world of wine in the early ‘90s when my then-boyfriend and I went on a trip through the South of France and Italy. I was only 21 and it was my first trip of this kind. Everything was new and exciting, glamorous and intoxicating. It was during that trip that I fell in love with wine and how it can be such a big part of an experience.
“Fast forward to my trip to Nashville in the summer of 2017 when I recorded my album, Golden, this is actually where I was inspired to create my own rosé. While dining al fresco one night, my manager and I were enjoying a lovely rosé to cool down from the heat. I remember holding the glass and just thinking how pretty it was and I said: ‘I’d love to have my own rosé.’ Three years later, that dream was realised. And it all started with the Signature Rosé – it’s absolutely wild that we just celebrated our fifth anniversary.”
- Q.Christmas isn’t far away, which means we’re about to enter the hosting season. Tell us how you like to entertain. What does a dinner party at home look like? What’s the secret to being a great host?
“I love to welcome everyone with a glass of my 0% Sparkling or Prosecco Rosé – they set the tone and help with decision making. I’ll usually pair them with light canapés to get the conversation and taste buds going. I have to confess that in the Minogue household, I am definitely not the chef. My brother and sister both have a natural talent in the kitchen, so I am more than happy to be on wine duty.”
- Q.You’re hosting a group of people at home – it’s mid-afternoon, the weather is perfect, you’re pouring glasses of Kylie Minogue 0% Sparkling Rosé, what’s your favourite dish to serve with it? How should we be enjoying it?
“Firstly, that sounds just perfect and, can we arrange this more often?! The 0% is so versatile; you can enjoy it with something as simple as a bowl of strawberries or make it the centrepiece of a long lunch. The best way to serve it is chilled, straight from the fridge – pop the cork, pour it into beautiful glasses, and let the sparkles set the mood. But my dream meal with our 0% Sparkling Rosé is grilled langoustine (AKA scampi) or any light, fresh seafood. It’s an Aussie icon, so let’s get the barbie going. Actually, I’m going to double down on the dream scenario – a good family friend, Chriso, is an amazing fisherman and if he goes out in the morning, you just know he’s coming back with a fresh haul. So that, enjoyed with a crisp glass of it would be perfect.”
- Q.You’re currently on tour in South America. Do you have any pre-show rituals? Is a glass of Kylie Minogue 0% Sparkling a non-negotiable?
“Touring is one of the reasons I love having non-alcoholic wine in the KMW range. It felt more complete to offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to the team and guests after a show. As the brand has grown, I really wanted to be able to open our arms and welcome everyone into the KMW family – wine lovers, non-drinkers, those choosing not to drink on that occasion or those just curious to try our 0%. On that note, I’ve seen the transformation when people have doubted a zero%* wine, without fail, everyone has loved it and added it as not only a viable option but a really enjoyable one.
“Back to pre-show rituals. Everyone is so professional that we are pretty busy with prepping for the show. I always try to factor in a sing-song with the backing singers and band so we can warm up and get in step with each other. Plenty of nights we’ve just run out of time, so then it’s a case of some singing while walking to stage, which has a special excitement in itself. Right before I go on stage, I’ll try to take even a few seconds to shut my eyes and be in the moment. Then, it’s showtime. I just adore the teamwork and talent that goes into making a show and then sharing that with the incredible audiences and making new memories.”
- Q.Your career to date is pretty spectacular. Since its inception in 2020, Kylie Minogue Wines has become one of the fastest-growing global wine brands. When you reflect on all that success, how do you feel? And what’s next for Kylie Minogue Wines?
“Since launching Kylie Minogue Wines, we’ve sold over 22 million bottles in 32 countries, which is something I am incredibly proud of and still a little blown away by. More than anything, it moves me that we’ve created something people truly connect with. The more I learn about wine, the more I realise just how much there is to discover. It’s such an intricate and fascinating world and I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some of the most respected winemakers. They’ve taught me that great wine always begins with care and quality – from the vineyard to the final blend. Nothing is rushed. I’ve loved being hands-on at every stage, whether that’s tasting and blending or the design and roll out. I’m very moved with how deeply people have embraced the wines – especially our alcohol-free range. I always wanted the brand to feel open and inclusive, and with more and more people choosing not to drink, it was important to provide a beautiful zero%* option.
“As for what’s next, we’re continuing to grow, but always with care – quality comes first. We’ve just launched our Limited Edition Côtes de Provence, which I’m very excited about. And there are a few things in the works that I can’t share just yet… Watch this space!”
