It’s on – 10 days of diner food and drinks with an all-star twist starts now. Plus, a free drink if your name is Dan.

It’s official, baby! Dan’s Diner has swung open the doors and is open to the public from now until March 24. As part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, we’re serving up a reimagining of your deepest diner daydreams at Fed Square – the kind of ramped-up food and drink that’ll have you cancelling all your other plans. Open from midday to 9pm (for lunch, dinner and drinks) nearly every day of the festival, it's walk-ins only, so stroll on over and pull up a stool.
The food The food comes courtesy of an all-star, all-Dan chef line-up: Dan Hunter (of three-hat regional Victorian trailblazer Brae), Dan Puskas (from fellow three-hat Sydney icon Sixpenny) and Daniel Wilson (from the powerhouse that is Yakimono). They’re taking a break from some of the country’s best (and hardest to book) restaurants to whip up their takes on nostalgic, diner-style comfort food. We’re talking crinkle-cut disco fries with eggplant and chicken gravy. Mini hash browns with Yarra Valley salmon caviar, seaweed crème fraîche and finger lime. Pork and venison meatloaf with pickles, potatoes and toast. Pancake short stacks with bacon and serrano chilli honey, served with a side of smoked eel butter. Banana splits drenched in spiced-rum caramel. It’s outrageous, actually. And must be tasted to be believed.

The drinks

And to drink? It wouldn’t be a Dan’s do without a mouthwatering array of drinks of all kinds. Cocktail king Dan Docherty (yes, another Dan) from the legendary Commis has spun up a wild list. Wrap your mouth around a Danhattan or Dan Murphizz, perhaps. Or maybe you’re more the type to go for the Dan's Super-Extra Ultra Deluxe Double-Straw Honey Wattle White Light Vodka Shake? Whoever you are, the diner has a cocktail (both alcoholic and non) for you. Of course, there’s also plenty in the wine, beer and spirits department – all Victorian, all brilliant.

You can pop in for a quick sip, a full blown feast or… a spot of education. At 3pm each day, the bar will transform into an open-invite educational tasting hub. Meet some of Victoria’s buzziest independent producers and score free tastings of their delicious drinks. From Patrick Sullivan to Four Pillars, Wonki to Blackman’s Brewery, there’s a tonne to discover.

The Happy Hour

Is your name Dan? Do you know anyone called Dan? Would you like to come to the best Dan party you’ve ever heard of? Here’s where it gets even better for you. From 4 to 5pm, Thursday to Sunday 21 to 24 March, it’s Dan’s Happy Hour. If you’re one of the first 20 people through the door during happy hour who can produce ID to show that your first name is Dan, Dan Murphy is going to buy you a drink. You’ll get a Dan Murphizz – a delicious concoction of Melbourne Gin Company’s fine dry gin shaken with Marionette apricot brandy and lemon juice, served long, tall and refreshing over ice with soda – for free.

Just come to the bar, show us a valid driver’s licence, proof of age card or passport to show that you’re 18 or over, and that your first name is Dan, Daniel, Danielle, Daniele, Daniela, Danny, Dani, Danni, Dannii, Dana, Daen, Daan, Dante, Danika, Daniyyel, Danail or Danyal, and the drink is yours.
