A Tiramisu Martini cocktail with savoiardi biscuits

There’s always room for a sweet treat when these spirits and liqueurs are involved.

Sweet tooths: we see you. You’re the one choosing a cheeky choccie mousse over a selection of local cheeses, adding Maltesers to your large movie popcorn, and bringing (another) homemade batch of choc-chip cookies into the office. Heck, not only do we see you, we also respect your commitment (especially when we get to partake in these treats). So, with that in mind, we’ve pulled together a list of sweeter spirits that sing in dessert-style cocktails or can be savoured neat or over ice, depending on what takes your fancy.

1. 1800 Coconut Tequila Liqueur

A tequila that’s not suuuper sweet, but certainly sweeter than the traditional spirit, the 1800 Coconut Tequila Liqueur is crystal clear and unexpectedly coconutty. It blends premium blanco tequila, crafted from 100% Blue Weber agave and is double-distilled, with natural, ripe coconut flavour for a tropical twist on a classic spirit. It opens with a soft, sweet agave aroma, while on the palate you can expect a medium-bodied mix of creamy coconut, vanilla, caramel and tropical fruit; the finish is long, with a subtle hint of a tropical holiday and gentle pepperiness. Try it in place of your traditional blanco tequila in a Pineapple and Coconut Margarita. Yes, it will turn up the tropical factor a few notches, but is that such a bad thing? We think not.

2. Seven Seasons Honey & Wattleseed Coffee Liqueur

Founded by proud Larrakia man Daniel Motlop, Seven Seasons takes the world’s oldest flavours and bottles them in their quality spirits. Inspired by the seven seasons as experienced by the Larrakia people, every creation follows the rhythms of the land. Their Honey & Wattleseed Coffee Liqueur captures the moment when bees gather nectar from native eucalypts to create rich, floral bush honey. This is then blended with native wattleseeds, adding a hint of hazelnut warmth that folds seamlessly into the bold coffee flavour. The result? A liqueur with layers: chocolate upfront, mocha and candied walnut through the middle, and a lingering finish of honey and spiced chai. Delish! Enjoy it sipped neat or over ice – or do as the brand suggests and pair it with Seven Seasons Native Yam Vodka for an Espresso Martini with a twist.

3. Choya Yuzu Liqueur

Here we have a bright, citrus-laced and oh-so-refreshing Japanese liqueur. It blends traditional Japanese umeshu and fragrant yuzu harvested from Shikoku Island, and the result is all kinds of floral, zesty fun. Its unique sweet-but-tart profile tastes like a fancy yuzu lemonade – light, balanced and very smooth. It’s juicy and vibrant, offering notes of lime, yellow grapefruit and tangerine, making it a fantastic substitute in cocktails that call for white spirits or bubbly. Or, do as Aurelia St Clair does and try it in a Yuzu Gimlet: a tipple that perfectly balances sweet and sour, and will go down a treat when serving Japanese-style snacks like spicy edamame and pickled cucumbers.

4. Brookie’s Mac. Liqueur

What do you get when you combine macadamias from the Northern Rivers (hand-roasted locally at Brookfarm) with toasted native wattleseed, decadent butterscotch, cacao and coffee notes? A nutty game-changer, that’s what. This premium Macadamia and Wattleseed Liqueur is brought to you by the clever folks at Brookie’s, who have perfectly captured a versatile, vibrant and unmistakably local drink. Whether you pour it over ice with a cheeky lime wedge (aka the Easy Mac.) or shake it into your Espresso Martini for something different, Brookie’s Mac. Liqueur adds a deliciously unexpected spin we know you (and your guests) will go nuts for.

5. Chambord Liqueur

You’ve no doubt spotted a bottle of Chambord in a cocktail cabinet or three – it’s a classic from way back. Literally. It’s been around since the 17th century, inspired by a raspberry elixir once served to King Louis XIV at the Château de Chambord. How regal. Today, this black raspberry liqueur blends red and black raspberries, blackberries, Madagascan vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey and a splash of XO Cognac – creating a rich, semi-sweet berry flavour with gentle hints of vanilla and citrus. Its striking colour makes a statement, while its velvety texture makes it a versatile addition to your drinks. We love it in a French Martini, and when you see how pretty (and tasty) this cocktail is, we think you’ll be a fan, too.
$65.99 each

6. Disaronno Italian Liqueur

Some things get better with little tweaks over time, but others don’t need to change at all – just like Disaronno Italian Liqueur. To this day, it’s still crafted in Saronno, Italy, and its recipe has remained untouched since 1525. That’s commitment. So, what’s the secret to this amaretto? A carefully balanced infusion of 17 hand-picked herbs and fruits, all soaked in rich apricot kernel oil. Caramelised sugar gives this liqueur an unmistakable amber hue, with no additives in sight – just pure, velvety goodness. From its aromatic notes to that signature almond-like sweetness, Disaronno isn’t just a liqueur, it’s a little sip of Italian history. Add that Italian history to an Amaretto Sour and thank us later.

7. Absolut Vanilia Vodka

Vodka, but make it sweet. This twist on Absolut’s traditional spirit is the best way to infuse a touch of warm vanilla into your favourite cocktails (we love it in a Pornstar Martini and the Tiramisu Martini, which is that creamy dream pictured at the top of this page). This sweet spin on the Swedish classic layers in warm, natural vanilla, bringing creamy toffee notes, a hint of dark chocolate and a nice rounded sweetness. Made from winter wheat grown in the fields around Åhus and distilled using Absolut’s time-honoured continuous method, it delivers a clean, full-bodied spirit – with no added sugar in sight. Even if you’re not mad for sweets, you’ll love just how versatile this spirit is.
$53.99 each

8. Rum Co. of Fiji 5 Year Old Spiced Premium

Aged for five years in charred American oak barrels and filtered through coconut shell carbon, Rum Co. of Fiji 5 Year Old Spiced Premium brings a rich complexity and smoothness. On the nose, enjoy warm notes of charred oak and citrus, while the palate offers yummy vanilla and candied orange, wrapped in cinnamon and star anise spice. The finish has gentle mocha notes, making it a great rum to enjoy neat or in a cocktail. Speaking of, take it for a spin in a Type C Negative, which is named after its notes of coffee, coconut and chocolate. Not for the faint-hearted, this delicious combination of flavours makes the ultimate dessert cocktail. And that’s the reason we’re all here, right?
