Ginger beer is here and it’s not leaving, so try these zesty alcoholic brews.

Ginger beer isn’t just for people who don’t like beer, though it is often thought of that way. It’s a zingy, spicy, sparkly number that deserves its time in the sun (hello, summer). So, we’ve rounded up a few of our fave alcoholic ginger beers for your perusal. From big spicy numbers to sweeter, more refreshing sippers, ginger beer is coming back in a big way, so get onboard. But before we show you our stellar list (don’t mind if we do), what exactly is ginger beer, and why has it been kicking on for so long?

Traditionally, ginger beer is a fermented mix of ginger, sugar, yeast or a SCOBY (and sometimes citrus) in water. It’s a process very similar to how kombucha (read more about that here) or even sourdough are made; these days, however, ginger beer producers tend to add carbonation to speed up production. It was first sipped in England around the 18th century and alcoholic versions were initially made at around the same percentage as regular beers. Ginger ale, on the other hand, is a Canadian invention and generally less gingery, sweeter and not alcoholic. We love a ginger beer, not only because it’s damn scrumptious, but it’s also a great cocktail ingredient – who doesn’t love a Moscow Mule or a Dark and Stormy? So, whether you’re mixing up a cheeky ginger cocktail or casually sipping it in the sun, here are our recos.

1. James Squire Lower Sugar Ginger Beer

Look, we’re not anti-sugar, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little sugar hiatus. For this, we’d recommend the James Squire Lower Sugar Ginger Beer. It’s still got all the markers of a regular ginger beer, just slightly drier. It is nice and light, but still has that great zappy ginger spiciness. Old Jamesy recommends serving it over a fistful of ice and a generous chunk of lime. Do yourself a favour and pair it with some fish tacos. We reckon the sweetness of the fish and those dope fried flavours sit nicely with the lower sugar and spice from the ginger beer. Have a crack!

2. Bertie Ginger Beer

Bertie Ginger Beer does not muck around. Made from real ginger and free from artificial colours and flavours, this bitty is the real deal. Unlike our sugar-free friend above, Bertie’s dryness is only subtle, so expect a lovely sweetness on the palate, bolstered by some lively ginger and crisp sparkles. It is a true gem and definitely one for some sun. Thai or Vietnamese cuisine is the fail-safe here. Those great aromatic flavours like coriander, mint, ginger (you can never have enough), and lime sit well with the spicy sweetness of Bertie’s Ginger Beer.

3. Amply’s Ginger Beer Zero Sugar

If you love your ginger beer spicy, but not necessarily sweet, then Amply’s Ginger Beer Zero Sugar is the brew for you. Again, there’s some great spiciness and crisp beads in the can, but waayyy pared back on the sugar (duh, it’s zero sugar). It’s a slightly higher ABV, which meshes super well with that fuller ginger flavour. Amply’s is begging for some snackage, so we reckon the humble salt and vinegar chippy is a go here.

4. Great Northern Ginger Beer

If you need an all-rounder ginger beer, this is your go-to. Not only is it made with the finest ginger Queensland has to offer, but this little number is the perfect balance of crisp and dry, making it wonderfully refreshing. Totally understandable, as it’s designed for those hot northern summers. If you’re wondering what kind of food we’d be pairing with this spicy li’l minx, we reckon it’s a bit of a barbecue moment. Think about it: all those thick sticky marinades, and big, juicy, fatty meats – you’re going to need something a li’l fresh and spicy to cut through, which is why Great Northern Ginger Beer is your best friend here. Trust us.

5. Amply’s Dry Ginger and Whisky

Right, now we’re into flavoured-ginger beers. To be clear, this guy isn’t just a ginger beer, but a ginger beer flavoured with whisky. So, kind of different, but also sort of not. It’s really just a fun Aussie take on your classic ginger beer, so keep that in mind when reaching for a can of Amply’s Dry Ginger and Whisky. It has that great spicy kick from the ginger, but is balanced nicely with the higher ABV, alongside the vanilla and oak flavours of the whisky. Chuck this next to a big, delicious butter chicken or tikka masala and happy days.
