6 Mexican-style lagers against a pink background

Una cerveza, por favor! These are light, crisp and just made for the sunshine.

If you think of Mexican beers and can only picture Corona, it’s time for a stroll around the beer section because there’s so much more to explore. It’s safe to say this light beer style hasn’t always been the north star for other breweries, but that was then. Now? All sorts of other producers (yep, crafts included) are muscling in on this most approachable and, in our opinion, most holiday-ready beer. And we reckon it’s about time.

With beer made in so many different styles, some can be quite polarising (we’re looking at you, Imperial IPA), but the best thing about Mexican-style beers is they’re for everyone. Well, your hops-loving mate might be a little hesitant, but hand them one of the bad boys below – ideally paired with good friends, salty snacks and sunshine – and we think they’ll see the light. Even that friend who doesn’t usually drink beer is likely to find it goes down a treat.

So, what actually is a Mexican beer? The ones we know and love, like Corona, are brewed with maize, as opposed to other grains like barley or wheat. By using corn, brewers get a beer with less bitterness, a lighter body, refreshing flavours and that trademark golden colour. Want in? We’ve selected six standouts, but be sure to keep an eye out for others – highlights like the Kaiju! Cerveza Crisp Lager are only available in Victoria, so it’s worth taking your time on that stroll around the beer aisles.

1. Corona

We have to lead with Corona, don’t we? This Mexican lager is celebrating its 100th birthday this year (feliz cumpleaños!), and it’s still as popular as ever. This golden brew is smooth and refreshing, but still has a touch of malt and hops going on. Some say the lime wedge in the bottle neck was initially done to keep the flies out, but we’re sticking with this garnish – the citrus boost makes all the difference.

2. Sol

Another Mexican staple, Sol is actually older than Corona, first brewed in 1899, and you can’t miss its bold red logo. Another beer that’s true to the style, this is easy drinking at its best. Expect a crisp, clean and golden lager that will be bang-on for just about any occasion – or dish – this season, but we think it demands a taco feast with friends.

3. Calaverita

Here is a Guatemalan take on the Mexican lager style, and it does it well. The Calaverita is bright and golden with subtle notes of malt and hops, creating a crisp, bright beer that’s low on bitterness and big on refreshment. Even better, with its name (meaning ‘skull’) and its label design, it’s an excellent choice for any Day of the Dead celebrations.

4. Vasto

Even the Portuguese are having a go – Vasto is their take on the Mexican-style lager. It’s crisp and golden, with just enough bitterness to keep things lively, yet it’s still bright and fruity. In short: spot on. This is exactly the type of beer you want for all those upcoming barbies.

5. Balter Cerveza

Can Balter do any wrong? Not when it comes to this Cerveza, which adds to their popular range that includes the XPA and Easy Hazy. Designed to taste exactly like what you’d expect from this kind of lager, it’s crisp, light on hops and super approachable. The clear bottle design ticks all the Mexican-lager boxes, but you can also get this brew in a can. Win.

6. Modus Operandi Cerveza

Inspired by Mexico, this beer from Newcastle brewery Modus Operandi hits all the right notes. Packaged in a striking can – you can’t miss that palm tree and cactus – as well as the instantly recognisable clear bottle of the style, this beer is a major winner. It’s light, crisp and ready for its fresh lime wedge.
