A selection of pinot noirs that work well with all kinds of dishes

Picking up a wine for dinner? These fresh, tasty pinot noirs are guaranteed to impress your mates.

A dependable dinner wine is a must-have in any wine-lover's arsenal. It should be interesting without being divisive, high quality yet good value, and suit a variety of cuisines. But most importantly, it should leave the other dinner guests completely floored by your selection. The first sip should have people reaching for the bottle, taking a photo of the label and seeing you in a whole new light.

Few wines are as unanimously enjoyed as pinot noir is. The delicate flavours of strawberry and cherry can charm the most judgemental palate, while the spice adds a liveliness sure to spark conversation. So, if you're in the market for wine that's made for sharing at the table, look no further than these six pinot noirs.

1. Madam Sass Pinot Noir

Who doesn’t love a bit of sass at the dinner table? This luscious pinot noir keeps things lively with juicy red fruits, a lick of spice and a smooth finish. It comes from Chile, and Chilean pinot noir tends to be a bright style with an emphasis on fruit over earthiness, so it will pair really well with roast chicken, brussel sprouts or even mushroom risotto.

2. Yering Station Little Yering Pinot Noir

Yering Station was Victoria’s first winery, having planted its first vineyards way back in 1838, and it's still one of the region’s top producers. The Little Yering is their entry-level pinot noir, but make no mistake, it’s a much-loved example of what the Yarra Valley’s vineyards are capable of. Silky and approachable, it balances savoury spice with bright red cherries, making it an easy-drinking option that's bound to please everyone at the table.

3. Anon Pinot Noir

Made in the cool-climate vineyards of Tasmania, this wine is truly Tasmanian in style. It’s elegant, sophisticated and delicate with notes of strawberry, red cherry and spice, culminating in a stylish, modern style of pinot noir. And as delicious as Tasmanian wine is, it’s surprisingly uncommon to see ‘mainlanders’ drinking it, so you can be sure of a good reception when you walk through the door with a bottle.

4. Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir

New Zealand’s Martinborough region has a reputation for producing some exceptional examples of pinot noir, despite often being overlooked for more well-known regions like Central Otago and Marlborough. Anyone who takes the time to taste the wines will become a fan for life, and this pinot noir from Te Kairanga is no exception. It offers cherry fruit and forest floor characters on the nose, followed by delicate strawberry flavours and a fresh acidity. Our suggestion? Portobello mushroom burgers in a brioche bun, or crispy Peking duck at your favourite Chinese BYO restaurant.

5. Range Life Pinot Nero

If you’re after a super fun pinot noir that was made to drink young, look no further than Range Life. This Mornington Peninsula outfit gathers grapes from some of Victoria’s best fruit parcels, combining them to make a vibrant, juicy wine with flavours of raspberry, cranberry and tart cherry. The wine tastes as good as the bottle looks, ensuring your friends will be talking about your selection for weeks to come.

6. Sticks Pinot Noir

Overwhelmed in the pinot noir aisle? Just remember: pick up Sticks. They're a Yarra Valley producer making a really light style of pinot noir, with classic varietal flavours of cherries and spice as well as oak influence bringing a lovely oastiness. Given its leanness and lighter body, this pinot makes for an excellent pre-dinner wine, perhaps with a cheese platter or grazing board. It’ll also do well when matched with chicken or even seafood, so don’t hesitate to bring a bottle of Sticks instead of a white wine.
