A rowdy watering hole and a coveted gig for Melbourne’s upcoming rockers, The Gem is all about drinks for any occasion, fried chicken and the vibe.

The bar and interiors at The Gem
Why you goDo you like live music played loud and lairy to a willing audience? Do you enjoy cracking through the perfectly seasoned exterior of a fried chicken drumstick? Do you love drinking cold beer in a backstreet pub while having a jolly excellent time with all of your mates? Servicing the good folk of Collingwood for almost two decades, The Gem is simply that – a rough-cut jewel of the inner north and a proving ground for some of Melbourne’s most exciting emerging bands. Dark and saloony, it’s a pub’s pub if ever there was one – perfect for a knock-off froth at the bar, a dream with pals on a table out the front, and, most excellently, open every single day. Heck, it’s the (self-proclaimed) “best dang vibe this side of town”. Also, the chicken – did we mention the chicken?
Why you stayYou’re staying because the band is about to play, and the band is usually very good. It might be the knee-slappin’ good times of The Country & Western Ramblers, it might be garage punk agitators Smooch, and it could just be The Unknowns, a spin-off of pub rock-royalty The Chats. You had an inkling things might get a little “how ya goin’?” when you walked through the door at sundown and chanced on a couple of young bucks singing “Eagle Rock” with their pants down, and your inkling was right. It’s now 10:00pm and the place is jumping. You’re pinballing about the mosh wearing half your neighbour’s pint, and you yourself are now one “Daddy Cool” chorus away from unbuckling. You mightn’t yet know it, but these are, in fact, the good old days.

What drink to order Depends. The Gem’s open from noon till late, so what’s the occasion? Recovery? Order a Bloody Mary. Freelance business meeting? Go a craft pint from a good range of taps. Filing for bankruptcy? An $8 pint of Sonny’s Lager during happy hour – noon till 6.00pm daily. Date night? Picklebacks. Promotion? Margs. Demotion? Spicy Margs. Business as usual? A proudly Victorian-brewed pint of refreshing Carlton Draught.
What to pair it withChicken. Ever been to the John Curtin Hotel on Lygon Street? It’s a pub with a lot in common with The Gem – live music, appealing dankness, and the exact same fried chicken: Sonny’s fried chicken. You got dark meat, you got white meat, you got Buffalo wings, you got tenders, you got salt chicken ribs, you got popcorn chicken, you got chicken burgers – and they’re all cluckin’ tasty. Vegan? Go a Southern fried tofu burger and a side of fried okra. Meat-enthused but don’t feel like chicken tonight? Order the triple cheeseburger – then go take a good hard look in the mirror.

Why we love it If you were to draw up a Venn diagram of inclusive, exuberant vibes, a great range of beers, shots and cocktails, finger-on-the-pulse music programming (bands and DJs), a spankingly good happy hour, a playfully rundown Americana aesthetic, and chicken, The Gem would be one of the few venues in that tiny little middle bit. Bang all that on a quiet backstreet corner in one of the city’s most colourful neighbourhoods, and you have a winning proposition suitable for hangs of all kinds: birthday parties, casual shenanigans, first dates, last dates – you name it.
Who to takeAny open-minded, fun-loving individual who’s comfy in a little chaos. Mum like a bit of Akka Dakka? She’s in. Colleague threatening to unleash their wild side? Right this way. The music isn’t always blaring – it can be quite tranquil during the day, in fact – but it will be guitar-driven most of the time, so keep that in mind when choosing your company. The punters are mostly Millennials and Gen Xers, but, really, everyone’s welcome at The Gem, so long as you ain’t fixin’ to cause no trouble.
