People enjoying Petition Beer Corner in Perth

A deep, far-reaching beer selection is supported here by tasty snacks and knowledgeable service from specially trained staff, making this a pub worth signing up for.

Why you goOne of the destinations inside Perth’s upmarket State Buildings precinct, Petition Beer Corner offers a far-reaching selection of beer styles and beer-drinking experiences. Looking for a place that’s open daily where you can sink some frothies while catching up with friends? Go ahead. A playlist heavy with rock radio hits should set the stage wonderfully. But if you’re in the mood to explore new and cutting-edge beers and beer styles, you’re going to be right at home inside this gently weathered space of dark timber and bare bricks. The staff are well-drilled and knowledgeable, the crowd is well-behaved and Beer Corner’s reputation as a polished modern-day pub is well-founded (even if you don’t like beer).

What drink to orderThe crux of Beer Corner’s offering is its constantly changing battery of 20 taps dispensing everything from world-famous brands (Guinness!) to idiosyncratic brews made by Australia’s many beer makers both big and small. Now factor in the contents of the fridges – the range moves too quickly for any printed menu to keep up – plus a reserve list and you’re looking at close to 200 beers to choose from, including aged treats and exclusive collaboration brews. There’s even beer in the cocktails – vodka plus cold-brew coffee plus a house liqueur made from stout equals a very on-brand riff on the Espresso Martini. A short, interesting selection of wines extends a welcome to all drinkers.
What to eatJust as the beer range covers everything from mainstream to niche, the menu ranges widely. Looking for a snack? WA-made Nick’s beef jerky and Detroit’s legendary spicy pickles from McClure’s should do the trick. Passing around some cheese, cured meats and Spain’s chorizo sausage – plus fries, obviously – will keep small groups fed. Otherwise, polished versions of evergreen counter meals tip the trucker hat to pub tradition: think Caesar salad, wagyu cheeseburgers and a cumin-spiked lamb focaccia that feels like the thinking beer drinker’s steak sandwich.

Why we love itEver met a cicerone? Just as sommeliers help drinkers navigate the wine universe, cicerones are trained beer experts who play a similar role in beer circles. And since Beer Corner opened, everyone who’s poured a beer here has gone through the vigorous cicerone certification program. The result is Beer Corner is home to one of Perth’s most knowledgeable beer-service teams. This continual training is just one example of the bar’s commitment to beer. All brews are served in roomy brandy balloons made by long-standing American glassmakers Libbey (all the better to smell and taste the beer, my dear), while cult beers are carefully aged as part of the bar’s beer-cellaring program.
Who to takeWhen you consider Beer Corner occupies a high-profile part of the CBD, it’s no surprise that city workers swarm here for after-work drinks and happy hour prices. While beer enthusiasts will find much to love here, the offer of well-chosen wines and cocktails plus snappy food makes the bar more than just somewhere to get your beer geek on. It’s a great business-casual lunch spot. It’s an ideal backdrop for team building. It’s the perfect spokes-venue for both the State Buildings and WA’s brewing scene. Nobody puts Beer Corner in a, well, corner.
