Mr Mick pays homage to a local winemaking legend, continuing his legacy by producing fine riesling and serving it alongside food that enhances the region’s most famous grape.

Why you go

When local winemaker Tim Adams bought the old Stanley Wine Company property in the heart of Clare, it was one of those moments when life completes a circle. Tim had worked at the property as a young man and understood the significance of the site to the Clare Valley. He also knew exactly what the new venture needed to be called. It just had to be Mr Mick.

Mick Knappstein, known to everyone as Mr Mick, is a towering figure in the history of Australian wine – the man who did as much as anyone to establish the reputation of Clare as a premium wine region through his work with the Stanley Wine Company. He hired Tim as a young winemaker back in 1975. The boss became a mentor, the mentor became a dear friend.

Mr Mick, the wine brand and restaurant, are Tim’s homage to the great man. Anyone who comes to experience this historic site would have to think Mr Mick would be pretty pleased.

Why you stay

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with the indulgence that comes with fine dining, sometimes you just want something quick, casual and delicious. The laid-back, tapas-style format of Mr Mick Kitchen nails that brief, giving diners the option to snack, graze or go the whole hog. That allows you to plan your day accordingly, whether you’re after a little sustenance as you explore the region’s vineyards, or want to settle in for a long, late lunch after a big morning’s tasting.

The Mr Mick winemaking team are the real experts on the menu here, so their recommended wine matches will guide you down the right path.

What drink to orderMick Knappstein’s love for Clare Valley riesling is legendary. So much so that the trophy for the best current-vintage riesling at the Clare Wine Show, arguably its most hotly contested award, is named in his honour. So, coming to Mr Mick Kitchen and not ordering a bottle of riesling is like going to the Louvre and not seeing the Mona Lisa. Or going to Cairo and not seeing the Great Pyramid, never seeing Manhattan from the top of the Empire State or going to Athens and asking to see the buildings that aren’t actually falling down.
What to pair it withThere’s plenty of riesling-friendly options on the ever-evolving menu at Mr Mick Kitchen, but there’s one staple that always works. Riesling loves nothing more than deploying its abundant natural acidity in the service of cutting through richness, so make sure you order the always-impeccable croquettes. Their composition may change regularly – sometimes Spain’s jamón ham, other times cauliflower – but their fundamental cheesiness and crucial deep-fried crunch are just perfect for pairing with the zesty and fragrant riesling that Mr Mick loved so much.

Why we love itYou can really get a sense of the history of Clare at Mr Mick. The beautiful old stone buildings that housed the original Stanley Wine Company are mostly preserved and have been cleverly used to provide a contemporary yet classic cellar door and restaurant. On warm days, the verdant lawns and towering trees are the ideal spot to soak up some sun with something utterly delicious in your glass.
Regular’s tipYou’ll spot the clever customers at Mr Mick Kitchen. They’re the ones who have their bikes parked outside. Clare’s famous Riesling Trail, a 33-kilometre riding track that gently meanders along the route originally carved out by the local railway line, passes closely by Mr Mick and sensible riders know it’s the ideal place for a pit-stop. The really clever ones know the trail will take them directly to the Tim Adams cellar door just a kilometre or so away.
Who to takeThis is the ideal place to bring first-timers to Clare – a symbolic way to start an exploration of this beautiful region at the place that is, in many ways, its spiritual heart. Just make sure you can tear yourselves away at some point to experience everything else the region has to offer.
