A look inside Mountain Culture Beer Co's new venue in Sydney's Redfern

Try the Blue Mountains brewery’s award-winning line-up of craft beers and limited-edition specials in a new inner-city bolthole, all bolstered with plenty of beer-friendly snacks.

Mountain Culture Brewing Co. now has a venue in Redfern, Sydney
Why you goLove Katoomba’s Mountain Culture Brewery with its juicy cheeseburgers, stunning vistas and ever-evolving craft-beer list, but can’t face the two-hour train trip to get there? Good news. The team has opened another venue right in the heart of Redfern. You’ll find an extended food menu, more space, a long bar serving cocktails as well as beers, and all the mid-’90s indie rock your ears can handle over the airwaves. There’s even merch.
What drink to order

The beer menu is next-level. From limited-edition brews such as the creamy, silky Check it Out! oat stout and the mouthful-of-tropical-fruits Photon Fizzle sour to much-loved classics like the multi-award winning Status Quo pale ale, Scenic Route hazy and Moon Dust stout, it’s hard to make a bad choice. To avoid the chance of beer regret, order a tasting paddle and try them all. And while Mountain Culture might be heaven for beer drinkers, the team is also keen to let you know this is more than a brew bar. It’s also a neighbourhood cocktail bar, offering a Hopped Negroni (hops-infused gin, Campari and sweet vermouth), Peach Paloma (tequila, peach juice and lime juice topped with grapefruit soda) and even a Hard Pink Lemonade (vodka, raspberry liqueur, creaming soda, and a squeeze of lemon).

Choose from many great beers at Mountain Culture in Redfern
What to eatIf you haven’t ordered the “bogan dip selection”, you’re not really living. Think of it as all your favourite picnic dips, only bougie-fied. Hummus comes dressed with smoked paprika and fried chickpeas. Taramasalata is made with Tassie smoked salmon. There’s even a play on sour cream and sweet chilli, except here it’s creamy strained yoghurt mixed with smoky North African chilli paste. All that and a side of crunchy falafels to boot. The classic cheeseburger, just like the version you’ll find at the original Blue Mountains brew pub, sees a juicy beef patty covered in melted cheddar cheese, pickled onion and all the usual salad trimmings – add a rasher of bacon for extra juiciness. The Status Quo fish burger sees a crunchy batter made with their award-winning pale ale, served on a squashy milk bun with a side of chips. And if you arrive later in the evening, they have an after-hours kebab menu.

Why we love itThe beers are delicious and the staff are friendly, well-informed and relaxed. It’s the right combination of professionalism and laid-back neighbourhood bar vibes.
Don’t leave withoutAn umbrella. Among the other merch – socks, hats, cycling jerseys, cooler bags, keyrings, dog bandanas (cute!) – there are also branded umbrellas, for those days you want to rep an Australian cult brewery and keep your head dry.
Who to takeThis is a perfect place to catch up with a larger group of friends. The converted warehouse space offers plenty of room to stretch out and, somehow, even though it’s cavernous, it’s miraculously quiet enough to have a conversation.
