Inside the latest venue for Moon Dog at Docklands in Melbourne

One of Melbourne’s favourite craft brewers brings a taste of tropicana to Docklands with its huge beer hall, easy-drinking ales and good old-fashioned pub grub.

The multi-level Moon Dog Doglands space can hold a crowd
Why you go

“Understated” isn’t a word in the Moon Dog vocabulary. The local beer brand has a brewpub with a literal lagoon in Preston and another that’s Wild West-themed in Footscray. Doglands is no different. The brewer’s ginormous new beer hall – its biggest to date – sits on the concourse at Marvel Stadium, injecting some tropical vibes into Docklands. Floor-to-ceiling palm trees set the tone. A timber boardwalk meanders through the multilevel space. And colourful rings of light draw you towards the central, circular bar where the entire catalogue of Moon Dog brews pour from more than 50 beer taps. Pull up a stool right there and then, or ascend to the mezzanine for a bird’s-eye view. Doglands is also home to The Jungle Room restaurant, Moon Dog’s first foray into upmarket dining, which is a 70-seater suspended above the main bar area.

What drink to orderGiven the surrounds, it’s only fitting that you sip something with tropical undertones. Of all the Moon Dog beers on tap – available by the pot, schooner or jug – your best bet would be the aptly named Tropical Sour or the just-as-easy-drinking Pacific Ale. For the beer-averse, Moon Dog’s offshoot brand Fizzer deals in alcoholic seltzers (try the Piney Limey) and juices (the Summer Pash is a refreshing passion fruit flavour bomb). The cocktail game is stronger – but no less on-theme – in The Jungle Room, where you can order concoctions such as the Sunset Spritz with gold rum, pineapple and Campari, or the Nightflower Negroni infused with an orange and passion fruit herbal tea.

What to eatThe bulk of what you can expect to find on the menu at Doglands is good old-fashioned pub grub. We’re talking sizeable chicken (and vegan) parmas, double-decker smash burgers on milk buns and a crowd-pleasing kids’ menu. But there are also a few wildcards, including cheeseburger spring rolls and a banoffee-caramel sundae. If you want to up the culinary ante, though, The Jungle Room offers a more elevated restaurant experience. Start your meal with oysters souped up with barrel-aged chardonnay mignonette dressing, progress to snapper ceviche dressed with mango salsa and buttermilk, then go big with a 1.2-kilo slow-cooked lamb shoulder with chermoula.
Regular’s tip

While you can swing into The Jungle Room for a meal and a bev seven days a week, Doglands’ opening hours aren’t set in stone. The team only opens the big bar area on Marvel Stadium event days, which includes anything from AFL games and cricket matches to live music. Keep an eye on the Doglands Instagram page for updates. (Plus, if you’re a fan of the space, it’s bookable for functions for between 400 and 1200 people.)

Who to takeWith room for more than 1200 punters across over 2000 square metres, Doglands is the perfect place for casual get-togethers of grand proportions. Whether it’s a family catch-up or high-school reunion, a gym or sporting-club gathering, or something else altogether, you can book a bunch of tables, but walk-ins are also more than welcome.
