Why you goCan we say icon? Very well, then. This pub icon is the stuff of Melbourne memories. You can’t call yourself a local until you’ve had a drink at the upmarket South Yarra digs where countless corks have been popped and occasions celebrated. The unmissable spot opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens offers plenty of moving parts. There’s a dining room, several bars, a leafy courtyard and prime tables on the street where peak preening takes place. Yes, it’s a scene – a giddy, dizzy, sometimes gaudy but always fun party. The Bot, as it’s more commonly known, has been through various guises over the decades, but under new-ish owner Rabih Yanni there’s less emphasis on chasing awards and more focus on nailing the pub fundamentals, albeit with an upwardly mobile twist.
Why you stayYes, it’s in one of Melbourne’s enclaves of privilege, with the flash cars parked outside on Domain Road to prove it, but the Bot is a democratic beast. You can dress to impress or rock up in your tradie best; you can go for a burger and chips or splash out on a show-off platter of chilled seafood. Whether you’re on a Toyota or Tesla budget, there’s a breadth to the offering here that means everyone is happy.
What drink to orderAs befitting a place where people go to see and be seen, attention-grabbing cocktails and Spritzes are a thing here, including jugs of Spicy Margarita served with chilli salt-rimmed glassware and a wedge of lime. Botanical’s reputation as a serious wine pub is deserved thanks to a reserve list that’s deeper than Port Phillip Bay. The likes of a 1982 Château Cos d’Estournel stray into serious wine-buff territory, but there’s plenty of affordable interest among the Australian selection of big-name and independent producers. Spirits are treated with equal reverence: that gin and tonic comes with your choice of more than 40 gins, ranging from London’s Beefeater to Seven Seasons Green Ant Gin.

What to pair it withExpect a menu of gussied-up pub classics, including a chicken schnitzel and prime beef cuts off the wood grill, but there’s also the chance to fly higher with angel-hair pasta with spanner crab, say, or grilled jumbo prawns with Hong Kong’s spicy XO sauce. Conspicuous consumption being the order of the day, there’s also a lamb shoulder with all the trimmings designed for two or more to share, or a statement-making half lobster with mac ’n’ cheese. If you just want a snack chaser to the more serious business of having a drink, look to the selection of oysters, cured meats or perhaps popcorn chicken to keep your engine humming.
Why we love itThe Bot certainly attracts a fast crowd, but it takes its reputation as a welcoming local seriously. The staff – many of them youngsters from the neighbourhood who have been visiting with their parents since infancy – are a friendly bunch, eager to guide punters through the mysterious depths of the seriously impressive spirits list or just to help find a seat when the joint is jumping. Add a 7:00am kickoff with coffee and croissants to take on that lap of the Tan Track in the gardens and you could argue Botanical is performing a valuable community service.
