Looking through the front window at Bear's Wine Bar in Melbourne

This neighbourhood joint is a wine bar first and foremost, while a short edit of standout cocktails and crowd-pleasing eats ensure everyone is happy.

Inside Bear's Wine Bar in North Melbourne
Why you goBehind a grand Victorian-era facade on a particularly leafy strip of Queensberry Street, mates Nathan Schofield (a somm) and Austin Kangket (a front-of-house gun) have opened Bear’s. It’s a new wine-fuelled watering hole for the people of North Melbourne – and beyond – that doesn’t take itself too seriously. In the afternoons, clusters of locals catch what’s left of the sun out front, sharing a bottle of something light and crisp. Then, as sunset strikes, the bar lights up in a golden glow, beckoning them to join the party inside – with a stiffer drink, perhaps, and something to eat. Emblazoned amid the bar’s historical brickwork, timber panelling and ornate chandelier is its emblem: a very cute, very chuffed cartoon bear with a glass (and bottle) of wine in tow, encouraging you to do as it does. Go for a glass, stay for a bottle.
What drink to orderBear’s is a wine bar first and foremost. By the glass, it’s almost exclusively Australian, with well-priced drops from the likes of TarraWarra, A Rodda and the Yarra Valley’s Fin (find its chilled red on tap), while the bottle list dives deeper into familiar European wine regions. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, the short edit – which switches with the seasons – keeps things fun and fruit-forward. You might find the Cherry Cola, a grown-up spin on the soft drink starring Arette tequila, or an Irish Apple Juice, blending the freshly juiced stuff with Jameson whiskey. And longneck fans will be pleased with big old bottles of Melbourne Bitter.
What to eatThe food menu has burgeoned into a much bigger beast than was originally planned. Sure, there are on-the-mark drinking snacks such as potato cakes with chicken salt and gravy, and prawn toast with burnt-chilli mayo. But full-on meals are also very much on the cards, with fried-chicken-topped Caesar salads and barbecue miso eggplant with wild rice and green chilli. Regular menu aside, there’s a chalkboard full of “Bear’s Extras”, which includes the cheese and cured meats of the day and dessert specials (deep-fried Tim Tam, anyone?). Plus, as the weather cools down, winter warmers like a Sunday roast will hit the menu.

Why we love it Nathan and Austin are by no means owners from afar. They’re on-site every day running the floor. Admittedly, it’s not uncommon to find the owners of an independent bar on the tools, but this duo is particularly dedicated. They’re jacks of all trades, pulling pints, stirring cocktails, serving food, clearing plates – you name it. And they’re always up for a chat, so pop in and say g’day.
Regular’s tipGot cocktail taste on a draught-beer budget? Fear not. The team at Bear’s Wine Bar does a selection of classic cocktails in smaller-than-usual sizes (at smaller-than-usual prices). For between $12 and $13, get cleverly named cocktails such as the Martiny, the Petit-groni and the Tiny Tommy, which are also great options if you’re the designated driver.
