From the perfect jukebox and the glow of the neon, to a handsome selection of beers and a rollicking, late-night vibe, this is the dive bar elevated to a fine art.

Heartbreaker Bar Melbourne
Why you goA dive bar hiding in plain sight on a Melbourne CBD intersection, Heartbreaker is a bit of a surprise package. Walk through the doors on the corner of Russell and Exhibition streets and you might be surprised to find yourself transported to a New York-style dive bar in the mid-1970s – a dim-lit world where the tunes are loud, and a lively crowd is determined to have a good time. On that note, all the right ingredients for a great night out are here – the rest is up to you.
Why you stayThe red neon Heartbreaker sign lighting up the bar is one of Melbourne’s finest Instagram moments and lends a deliberately seedy glow to the night. Next to it you’ll find the finest jukebox to ever have played a tune. Stacked only with classic vinyl from 1968 through to 1980, it’s all about turning the dial up to 11 to celebrate Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Television, Iggy Pop, the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed and – err – Rod Stewart. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is on high rotation – that’s both a warning and a promise. You might have gotten the drift by now that this is not the place for intimate canoodling, although plenty of relationships have started amid the atmospheric gloom. Take a crew, colonise a space, and have a riot of a time. Just try not to have an early start the next day.
Regular's tipNo need to hurry to get here – they close at 3am on weekends and 1am weeknights – but the party only really gets started post-10pm. If you want a seat, on the other hand, get in before the crowds.

What drink to order

This place might cultivate a devil-may-care attitude, but don’t be fooled: they take their drinks seriously indeed. Owner Michael Madrusan is behind leading Melbourne cocktail bar The Eveleigh and is such a perfectionist he started his own ice company. You can expect a perfectly clear cube of Navy Strength Ice Co ice in your drink, and this slow-melting glacier will make sure your batched Negroni (or Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Martini) won’t be diluted as you drink. Batched, you cry, as in they’re not made to order? Yep. But the same standards apply to these twist-top one-serve bottles, as well as the glassware they’re served in – and they free the bar staff up to serve more thirsty punters. Win.

So you’re more into beer? The list caters to those who like it crafty and others who see no reason to stray beyond Budweiser. This is a no-judgement zone, except you’ll win respect from across the bar for getting down with the lengthy list of bourbon and other whiskey that’s the real heart of Heartbreaker.

What to pair it withThe perfect dive bar food, the New York-style pizza at Connie’s is the only thing you want to eat late at night. Order at the bar (a full pie or by the slice) and pick up from the pizza window under the blue awning in the back room – the one near the stag head mounted on the wall. For $5 you’ll get a slice of pepperoni, cheese or Sicilian heavy on the mozzarella and San Marzano tomato sauce (but cleverly engineered so the toppings are unlikely to slide off into your lap in a sloppy mess). Whichever way you swing, shake on the powdered parmesan, chilli flakes and oregano and don’t forget to grab a napkin.
Why we love itGreat bars are all about how they make you feel, and Heartbreaker is the kind of place that will have you smiling the next day. When the place is roaring like a 747 on take-off, and the staff are swinging the pendant lights hanging over the bar (it’s a thing here) and the jukebox is delivering banging tune after banging tune… well, there’s nowhere you’d rather be.
