Beauty expert Ross Andrewartha and partner Jack with the Flying Scotsman cocktail

Say happy Father’s Day with this take on the Flying Scotsman cocktail. A tasty blend of whiskey and vermouth.

About the cocktail

In honour of great Dads the world over, we’ve collaborated with our fave father duo, the enigmatic beauty expert and professional make-up artist Ross Andrewartha, and his partner Jack. The collaboration in question? Why, a very fatherly, super-delicious twist on a Flying Scotsman cocktail, of course.

This will be the second Father’s day for our besties, Ross and Jack, so we chatted all things parenthood, babies and, of course, Father’s Day, starting with the Ross-Jack meet-cute. “We met online… say no more,” laughs Ross. “It took six months for us to finally meet. Jack wouldn’t pick me up in the car so, I said I wasn’t going. LOL. Six months later he picked me up.” What can we say, we hate public transport, too.

In August last year, Jack and Ross welcomed their gorgeous daughter Olivia – AKA Oli Bear. So, naturally, we asked Ross what the best part of being a new Dad was. “Watching our relationship evolve into a family. We now share this beautiful girl and we pinch ourselves that we finally did it. It’s something that we have both wanted for such a long time and we finally have our dream crew.” We’re not crying, you are.

So what’s on the agenda for Father’s day this year? “Seeing as Oli can't make us breakfast in bed yet, we will probably head to our favourite pub for lunch and celebrate.”

And there might just be an at-home Flying Scotsman cocktail to top it off. Speaking of, why this cocktail for this most fatherly of days? “It’s a cocktail I reckon most people haven’t had, so a great one to show off on the main day and get everyone talking. The flavour has a kick, but it also has a subtle freshness about it, which I love.”

The OG Flying Scotsman was first created, as the name suggests, aboard the famous (if not the most famous) locomotive in the world, The Flying Scotsman, in the 1920s and first featured in Harry Craddocks’ The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930, so it’s fairly old. Our Flying Scotsman takes a lot from that classic (if it ain’t broke…) but subs simple syrup/sugar for a homemade honey syrup, deepening the flavour of the drink.

So, what’s the inspiration behind this twist on a classic? “Half my family are Scottish,” explains Ross. “It’s a tradition in our family to always have a glass when we are celebrating. The Flying Scotsman was the cocktail that was served in business class on the train in the old days, and I love a little story.”

Think a Flying Scotsman will tickle your fancy? Us too. Before you start, have a look below at some of our tips and tricks to make this cocktail the very best at-home cocktail ever.

Ross’s top tips

All aboard the Flying Scotsman cocktail express! Here are our tips for making this cocktail the absolute best it can be.

First up, Ross suggests you “have your garnishing ready before you start, so no one can see you mess it up!” Solid advice, but he’s not finished: “Plenty of ice and our cheeky tip is chopsticks if you don’t have a cocktail stirrer.” Thrifty!

Secondly, if you’re wondering what kind of food to serve with this Scottish banger, Ross recommends having it “just after a bowl of pasta. We aren't a massive dessert family so a cheeky cocktail is a win for us. This also goes brilliantly with a beautiful salumi board.”

And lastly, if you’re getting all dolled up for your Father’s day Flying Scotsman, here’s what your lewk should look like: “This is your bronzed, sultry, smoky eye look, walking into a room understated yet being noticed for all the right reasons.” BRB – we’re off to watch some YouTube tutorials.
