Go fresh and fruity with a delicious Pimm’s Cup cocktail.

About the cocktail

As British as Doctor Who, the Pimm’s Cup is as iconic as it comes, and whether it's Wimbledon, The Chelsea Flower Show or Royal Ascot, you can bet that there’ll be a few jugs of Pimm’s about. Invented in 1823 by James Pimm – the owner of a London oyster bar – it was originally served in a tall beer mug, known as a No. 1 Cup, which is how it got its famous name.

Pimm's was originally spruiked as a health tonic that would assist with digestion. The recipe was a secret mix of gin, quinine and a spice blend, which proved to be quite popular among the health-conscious folks of London. Over time, its popularity soared and James Pimm sold the business and naming rights, thus giving permission to the new owners to take the brand onto the world stage with a global chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses.

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a Pimm’s while out at an event in the sunshine, but the experience is easily recreated at home, thanks to this easy cocktail recipe. It’s a wonderfully refreshing cocktail, thanks to the lemonade and dry ginger ale, while the cucumber, mint and fruit bring extra flavours to balance the aperitif. Our recommendation? Serve this in the backyard, or at the park, with a whole bunch of lawn games and enjoy the sunshine.

Dan’s top tips

This Pimm’s Cup cocktail is perfect for serving a larger group at a party or picnic. It’s easy to do; simply change the quantities to match the serves. This recipe serves one, so if you're having a picnic with four other people, times the quantities by five for the perfect jug cocktail.

Want to take your traditional Pimm’s Cup cocktail to new heights? Instead of dry ginger ale, add a bottle of your favourite Champagne to make a Pimm’s Royale Punch. This cocktail is next-level fancy and the extra fizz makes it perfect for special occasions. Fun fact: Pimm’s has been approved by the Queen herself, holding a Royal Warrant since 2011. So, if you’ve ever wanted to drink like royalty, this may be the closest you’ll get.
