Add a zing to your cocktail hour with this citrusy classic that’s sweet and sour.

About the cocktail

Delightfully sweet yet enticingly tangy, the Lemon Drop is the perfect balance of vodka, citrus and sugar to put that ‘zing’ in your cocktail hour.

Said to be invented by saloon owner Norman Jay Hobday, the Lemon Drop is believed to have originated in San Francisco in the ’70s. Named after the 19th-century candied lolly, the drink quickly became a runaway hit with trendy urbanites, and would go on to be featured in the pages of hip cocktail menus worldwide. Created during a revolutionary era where women began stepping out for a night on the town solo, it's rumoured that the strikingly chic Lemon Drop was initially created to entice single women to drink at Norman’s bar, Henry Africa (spoiler alert: the single men quickly followed).

Often mislabelled as a Martini, the Lemon Drop is more closely related to the Crusta or Daisy cocktail family. Both share a base of quality spirits with a balanced sweet, sour and citrus twist. The Crusta also shares the Lemon Drop’s crystalline sugar rim, a step we implore you not to skip when creating yours at home. Trust us, that sweet moment when the crunchy sugar brushes your lips before melding with the zingy hit of lemon and vodka is the icing on the (lemon) cake.

TV queen Oprah herself professed her love for the sweet ‘n’ sour sipper on her show in 2006, further cementing the cocktail’s icon status. The kaleidoscope of initial sweetness followed by a zippy tang is the perfect sweet-to-sour symphony that simply can’t be passed up. *drool*

Ingredients

  • 45mL vodka
  • 15mL triple sec
  • 20mL fresh lemon juice
  • 5mL sugar syrup
  • Glass: coupe
  • Garnish: orange wedge and sugar for the glass rim, and a lemon twist

Method

  1. Run an orange wedge around the rim of a chilled glass and dip it into granulated sugar to create the signature sweet rim – do this ahead of time to allow the coating to stay put
  2. Pour the vodka, triple sec, fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup into a shaker over ice
  3. Shake well until chilled – about 10 seconds – until the outside of the tin is forsty
  4. Tap where the two sides of the shaker meet to release the airlock (listen for a slight 'pop')
  5. Strain the cocktail carefully into your prepared glass
  6. Garnish with a fresh twist of lemon rind

Dan’s top tips

If the original version of this citrusy sipper is just what you look for in a bevvy buddy, why not try different takes on this 1970s classic?

Sweet tooth? Add a fruity kick to your Lemon Drop with the addition of raspberry and let the dynamic duo prove they are a match made in cocktail heaven. Create the berrylicious twist by using raspberry vodka and swapping out the syrup for raspberry liqueur. Oh, and be sure to add some fresh raspberries to garnish for some added pizzazz.

Prefer to amp up the sour element rather than the sweet? By swapping your syrup with limoncello and adding a dash of fresh grapefruit juice, your Lemon Drop will pack an extra tart punch that’s perfect for an after-work aperitif or to serve guests over summer (or pretend you’ve got warm weather).

Our final tip? Classic, fruity or seriously sour, just ensure your Lemon Drops are well chilled when served, and that you leave enough time for the trademark sugared rim to set.
