Hannah Furst with her favourite non-alc cocktails

With a bottle of non-alcoholic spirits in hand, there’s nothing award-nominated podcaster and ultimate cool girl Hannah Furst can’t whip up.

Writer, content creator, absolute demon on the podcast mic – what can’t Hannah Furst do? One thing she definitely CAN do (add it to the very long list) is whip up a mean non-alcoholic cocktail. Here the award-nominated co-host of the Single Minded and Beauty IQ podcasts shells out her intel on how to enjoy delicious cocktails without their traditional main ingredients.

Zero%* alcohol cocktails are having a moment. Gone are the days of ordering a mocktail and realising you just paid $15 for fruit juice poured into a martini glass. And I, for one, am very excited about it. I don’t drink. Shock horror, I know! But life goes on. I’ve danced, I’ve dated, I’ve even eaten a kebab on the sidewalk at 2am… all without alcohol.

Why not drink? I think it’s a personal choice for everyone, and for me, it just didn’t fit in with my lifestyle anymore. I’ll be honest: it’s hard sometimes. Especially when you host a dinner party and all your friends are clinking cocktail glasses, and you’re just looking at your plain can of Coke Zero thinking, “Jeez, it’d be nice to have a cocktail right about now.”

Then I discovered Dan Murphy’s incredible range of non-alcoholic drinks. Now, I always have my fridge well-stocked with zero%* options: from beer to sparkling to spirits. What’s weird is that I had a dinner party on a Wednesday night (try getting six busy women’s diaries to align on a Friday night!), and all my friends opted for non-alcoholic drinks… Because they’re that good!

So, if you’re in the same boat, do not fear. Non-alcoholic spirits have come a long way. One of my go-to cocktails has always been a Negroni, and guess what? It still is. You can pretty much recreate any of your fave cocktails with non-alcoholic alternatives.

You can finally say goodbye to fancy fruit juice, and say hello to five of my fave zero%* alcohol  cocktails.

Non-Alcoholic Negroni
1. Non-Alcoholic NegroniAfter I stopped drinking, anytime I saw someone enjoying a Negroni, I was reminded of nights in dark, moody basement bars, with my closest friends, sipping Negronis. Then, I discovered non-alcoholic Negronis, and it brought me right back to those nights. It’s got all the flavour without the alcohol. Lyres have a non-alcoholic solution for every Negroni ingredient – so follow the OG recipe as directed, just replace the the bitter orange liqueur with Italian Orange, the sweet vermouth with Aperitif Rosso, and the gin with Dry London Spirit. Serve in an old fashioned glass over ice and garnish with an orange slice. Optional: dim the lights to set the scene.
2. Non-Alcoholic GimletIt’s time to add a classic gin cocktail to your recipe repertoire. My version of the Gimlet swaps standard gin for Gordon’s 0% Gin, which uses the finest distilled botanicals, just like the original Gordon’s London Dry Gin. Creating a non-alcoholic Gimlet is simple – it’s just sugar syrup, lime juice, and non-alcoholic gin added to a cocktail shaker and garnished with a twist of lime. This simplicity allows the botanicals in the Gordon’s 0% to really shine.

Blood Orange Non-Alcoholic Spritz
3. Blood Orange Non-Alcoholic SpritzDrinking a Spritz always reminds me of balmy Melbourne nights (which are few and far between, I know). You know those nights: you’re wearing a sundress and sandals, and sipping a Spritz from a straw. The flavour totally captures Italy in a glass. And then it starts hailing in the middle of summer, and you remember, “Ugh, I’m actually in Melbourne.” When my friends are enjoying an Aperol Spritz, I opt for a Blood Orange Non-Alcoholic Spritz. This refreshing and zesty cocktail uses Lyre’s Italian Orange spirit mixed with Lyre’s Orange Sec – both totally alcohol free. Serve over ice with a garnish of rosemary and orange slice.
4. Non-Alcoholic Tommy’s MargaritaWhile all the girls on Hinge love Spicy Margs, I prefer to whip up a non-alcoholic one. This recipe is an alcohol-free version of a Tommy’s Margarita, which is a twist on the classic, swapping triple sec for agave nectar. To make my version, use Fluere Smoked Agave Alcohol-Free Spirit instead of tequila. This non-alcoholic spirit is distilled from real agave with smoked hickory wood to give a smoky richness. The perfect pre-dinner party cocktail.

Non-Alcoholic Salted Caramel Espresso Martini
5. Non-Alcoholic Salted Caramel Espresso MartiniIf you’re serving something up for the girls before a night out dancing, try this caramel twist on the classic Espresso Martini. This cocktail used to be my go-to post-dinner cocktail as me and my friends got ready for a night on the d-floor. This non-alcoholic version is smooth and sweet, so can also be served after dinner to accompany dessert. I like to swap out the vodka for ALTD’s Golden Emperor (a delicious non-alcoholic spirit that tastes like bittersweet orange and cocoa) and the coffee liqueur for Lyre’s Coffee Originale.
