Holding the French Connection cocktail

Cognac and amaretto together? Genius. Here’s to the French Connection cocktail.

About the cocktail

Are you looking to impress a group of bartenders? Then get to know the French Connection cocktail.

Made and named after the popular 1971 film, the French Connection cocktail is a close relative to the whiskey-based Godfather cocktail, which incidentally, is also named after a movie. No prizes for guessing which one.

While there are notable differences between the Godfather and  French Connection movies, there are huge similarities between the cocktails. In fact, the only noticeable difference is that the Godfather uses any sort of brandy, while the French Connection is exclusively Cognac.

One of the great things about the French Connection is that it is super simple to make but super flavoursome. It’s just two ingredients, Cognac and amaretto, served over ice in a cold old-fashioned glass.

It’s a fruity, sweet concoction that's perfect after a meal, accompanying dessert, or even in the place of dessert. We reckon it would go fabulously with a fancy cheese board.

Dan’s top tips

As we said above, this is a super-easy drink to make as it only has two ingredients. That being said, the flavours can get intense, so make sure you stir down the cocktail with ice long enough to get some dilution.

Lastly, using nice, sizeable ice cubes in the drink will make it a lot smoother, and this is crucial for ensuring you don’t have shards of ice floating around in the drink. Plus, everything just looks way prettier with nice ice – and we all deserve a bit of that.
