The Cosmopolitan cocktail in a tall coupe glass

Live your best Carrie Bradshaw life with the ultimate Cosmopolitan cocktail recipe for her favourite pink cocktail.

About the cocktail

Didn’t you hear? The ’90s are making a comeback. Yeah, that’s right. Dust off your low-rider jeans, pull out your Furbies and stock up on cranberry juice, we’re drinking Cosmopolitans.

Reaching peak popularity in New York and London during the 1990s, this pretty little vodka drink is tasty and often underrated. A balanced mix of lime juice, cranberry juice, Cointreau and vodka, it’s bright, light and the perfect pre-dinner cocktail. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a pink drink?

It’s unclear where and when the Cosmopolitan cocktail was first shaken, but the earliest mention of a cocktail like the modern Cosmo was in the 1934 book, Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars. It featured five cocktails called the Cosmopolitan (with slight variations), four of them with the Cosmopolitan’s famously pink hue.

Cheryl Charming (Miss Charming) in her 2018 book The Cocktail Companion attributes the rise of the Cosmopolitan to two separate people, 14 years apart: Neal Murray in 1975 and Cheryl Cook in 1989. But the true champion of the Cosmopolitan cocktail was Carrie Bradshaw in the hit ‘90s TV show Sex and the City. That was then, but the Cosmo is having a major comeback, so it’s time to perfect it at home with this tried-and-tested recipe.

Pink-hued Cosmopolitan Cocktail with orange peel
The Cosmopolitan, made famous in Sex & The City, is back

Ingredients

  • 40mL vodka
  • 20mL triple sec
  • 30mL cranberry juice
  • 10mL lime juice
  • Garnish: orange cheek or wheel

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker
  2. Throw in a healthy handful of ice and shake until the outside of the tin is frosty
  3. Strain into a coupe or martini glass – or any glass, you do you!
  4. Garnish with an orange cheek

Dan’s top tips

The Cosmopolitan is super easy to make, and the best thing is that if you’re not a fan of vodka, you can switch it out.

If you’re more of a gin person, switch out the vodka to make a London Cosmopolitan. Gin not for you either? Sub in some tequila to make it a Rude Cosmopolitan. Got a bottle of cachaça you don’t know what to do with? Make Brazilian Cosmopolitans. We even have the best recipe for a non-alc Cosmo. It’s the cocktail that keeps on giving.

Another little tip to level-up your Cosmo game is to flame your orange peel over the drink. It sounds harder than it is, but by putting a match to the peel – not the pith – and holding it over the drink (and away from yourself), aromatic oils are released into the drink, giving it a little extra flair.  Very bartendery indeed.

  1. How do Australians like to serve a Cosmopolitan cocktail?
Generally, a Cosmopolitan is served in a coupe or martini glass.

  2. Can I make a low-sugar or zero-egg white Cosmopolitan?
To reduce the sugar in a Cosmopolitan, swap the cranberry juice for a low- or no-sugar cranberry juice. There are no egg whites in a Cosmopolitan.

  3. Where can I get all the ingredients to make the best Cosmopolitan at home?
A Cosmopolitan calls for vodka and triple sec, which you can find on the shelves at Dan Murphy’s (or via the online store). You’ll find lime juice (fresh is always best, but you can use bottled) and cranberry juice at your local supermarket.
