The Corpse Reviver No. 2 cocktail

Create this spooky sipper, the Corpse Reviver No.2 – never fear, no zombies are involved.

About the cocktail

If you find thrills in the macabre and relate to the Gomez, Morticia and Wednesdays of the world, we have the perfect ‘Thing’ (sorry) for you. Introducing the Corpse Reviver No. 2.

The pre-prohibition concoction was the brainchild of the London Savoy’s legendary bartender Harry Craddock. Taking inspo from the original Corpse Reviver, which was said to have risen in the second half of the 19th century, the cocktail was given a new lease on life. In the pages of his The Savoy Cocktail Book, Harry detailed the spooky sipper as tart and distinctly aromatic, joking that the drink was potent enough to bring back a body from the grave.

Essentially an alternative take on the classic Gin Sour cocktail, Harry’s recipe included a wine-based aperitif called Kina Lillet that stopped production in 1986. The modern take is substituted with dry vermouth or Lillet Blanc. Some bartenders have even used the Italian Cocchi Americano to try and achieve the flavours of the original with Kina Lillet, as it lends sweet honey, citrus and bitter herbal flavours.

The result is an intoxicating libation of the spirit realm, so revered that it was placed on the International Bartender Association’s official cocktail list. And despite its name and compatibility with Halloween, reviving or reserving this gem for only the spooky season would do it – and yourself – a disservice.

Ingredients

  • 30mL London dry gin
  • 20mL white vermouth
  • 20mL triple sec
  • 20mL fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dash absinthe
  • Garnish: lemon twist

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker
  2. Add ice, then connect the two sides securely
  3. Turn the shaker over so the smaller side is facing the roof, and shake until the outside of the tin is frosty – approximately 10 seconds
  4. Tap where the sides of the shaker meet to release the airlock, you will hear a slight pop to open
  5. Strain the cocktail carefully into a chilled coupe glass
  6. Garnish with a lemon twist

Dan’s top tips

Once you have mastered the creepily clever Corpse Reviver No.2, the possibilities to liven it up with different flavours are pretty much endless, and drop-dead delicious.

You can swap the gin out for vodka, try a hit of lime juice instead of lemon, or use different liqueurs like the Italian Cocchi Americano, as mentioned above, in the place of triple sec.

Another killer contemporary take to try is the Necromancer, which swaps the ratios of gin and absinthe, and uses elderflower liqueur in place of triple sec. The result is an absinthe-forward supernatural sipper balanced with sweet floral notes and zippy bright citrus.

Whatever you do, just ensure you give the Corpse Reviver No.2 a try, we double dare you. It could even become your No.1.
