Lady Whistledown says lemon is in this season, so we’re making these cocktails.

(To be read in the dulcet tones of Julie Andrews) Welcome, all my humble readers. As we rrrroll into the winter months, it is Lady Whistledown’s great privilege to relay to you the diamond of the season. And no, we are not referring to the hoity-toity British elite who prance around in their outrageous frocks and haberdasheries. Oh no, this year, it is something we did not expect... Our lady, the Queen has declared it’s lemonade season.

You heard Lady Whistledown – this season it’s all about lemons and lemonade. And if you don’t believe us, watch any episode of Bridgerton ever (spoiler alert: they seemingly only drink tea and lemonade). So, to keep up with the Bridgertons (move over Kardashians), we must adopt the lemon, specifically the lemon cocktail. So, here’s our list of Bridgerton-inspired lemon cocktails and which character would be all over it. As Lady Whistledown would say, tally ho!

The tangy Lemon Sherbet Margarita
1. Lemon Sherbet MargaritaEverybody loves a Margarita. It’s timeless, sassy, a crowd fave – it’s the Lady Danbury of cocktails. But sometimes, a newcomer or a twist on a classic can be just as enticing and popular as its predecessor. This is why we reckon the Lemon Sherbet Margarita is perfect for our dear Penelope Featherington, uh we mean Lady Whistledown. It’s playful and fun yet serious and means business, much like Lady Whistledown. However, most importantly it’s an on-trend way to have your lemons and drink them, too. Think tequila, limoncello, lemon juice, agave syrup and a scoop of lemon sorbet (it’s a lot of lemon), all tangy, shaken and poured into a glass. A newcomer to usurp the lemon thrown? We think so. Note: while this drink is called a Lemon Sherbet Marg, there is no actual sherbet in the recipe.
2. Brandy Crusta Gird your loins and get your best curtsy ready – royalty is in the house. That’s right, it's Brandy Crusta time. One of the oldest reigning cocktail families in America, this beauty has been Queen Bee of the New Orleans cocktail tree since the 1850s – even predating the Sazerac. She may not be the simplest drink to make and takes some time to perfect, but believe us, when she’s all dolled up, she’s the star of the show. A mix of lemon juice, triple sec, Cognac and maraschino liqueur, this is fruity and sweet, yet complex and intriguing. In true Queeny fashion, her garnish (or crown) is what makes her – a coiled lemon peel and crusty sugar rim makes the Brandy Crusta stand out from the crowd. No surprises here – this cocktail is perfect for Queen Charlotte. Find the royal-worthy cocktail recipe here.

The classic Whiskey Sour cocktail
3. Whiskey SourA crowd pleaser that works the room, is an absolute snack and no, we’re not talking about the beautiful Lord Anthony Bridgerton (AKA Jonathan Bailey). We are, of course, talking about the classic Whiskey Sour. Look, it may be a little last season, but we promise this cocktail never disappoints. Smooth and sweet, yet with a welcoming and delicious sourness – it’s all very Viscount Bridgerton, if you ask us. And that is exactly who we’d be serving a Whiskey Sour. 4. Tom Collins
The Tom Collins is a stand-up drink. It’s the straight and narrow, dependable and consistent – just dry gin, lemon juice, sugar and soda water. No games or tricks here, just a well-made and delicious drink. Naturally, this screams Colin Bridgerton. No offence to dear ol’ Col, but he, like the Tom Collins, is very what-you-see-is-what-you-get. And that’s why it's the perfect drink for him. As simple as this drink is, there are some little tricks to making a great one, so click through to the recipe here.
Holding a glass of the French 75
5. French 75Elegant and timeless, the French 75 is a sophisticated combination of gin and Champagne, sugar syrup and lemon juice. Very similar to our Tom Collins above, just a little more poised and sweet, it’s only natural to serve this to Colin’s mother, Lady Violet Bridgerton. The gin's herby kick balances the lemon sourness, while the Champagne gives it a touch of joie de vivre, creating an approachable and delish flavour combo. Served in a flute, it's fancy yet friendly and a very welcome part of any soiree. Best of all, it’s damn easy to make, but have a gander at the recipe here.
