The Beericano cocktail, with a frothy top and orange garnish

Three ingredients, serious refreshment – meet your new go-to cocktail.

About the cocktail

  • When cocktails go viral, you’d be forgiven for being sceptical. I mean, have we already forgotten the Gonster debacle? Sometimes, though, faith is restored, just like it is with this bittersweet beauty – the Beericano.
  • The Beericano is a riff on the Campari-vermouth-soda combo of the Americano. But as endless reels have made clear, the Beericano stands out from the original by substituting the soda for beer, and adding a pint-like head of frothy foam on top for good measure. The cocktail is also similar to the Americano Perfecto, invented in New York by bartender Damon Boelte, combining beer, Campari and two kinds of vermouth, but that one doesn’t include the fun foam on top.
  • Like the Americano before it, the Beericano owes its bittersweet flavour profile to the Negroni. But unlike that other classic three-ingredient cocktail, the Beericano is long, bubbly and a lot lighter. Campari and vermouth bring those astringent, complex Negroni-like flavours, while a lighter style of beer (we’re going for a lager or pilsner) gives a slightly malty, lightly bitter length. It makes for a summery, refreshing beer cocktail that should suit anyone looking for a drink along the same lines as the Shandy or Michelada – and anyone else who wants to capture the TikTok magic of this delicious cocktail.

Topping the Beericano with beer

Ingredients :

  • 30mL Campari
  • 30mL sweet vermouth
  • 90mL lager or pilsner
  • Glass: highball
  • Garnish: orange wedge

Method

  1. Pop your glass in the freezer to chill for 20 minutes
  2. When ready, add the Campari and sweet vermouth to your chilled glass
  3. Fill with ice, and gently top with the beer
  4. Garnish with the orange wedge

Dan’s top tips

  • The viral version of this cocktail has that satisfyingly creamy head of foam. You can achieve it with the right pouring action, but you can also take an extra step to really nail the froth. The most popular method is to make your cocktail, then add a little extra beer into a cocktail shaker (plus an optional pinch of salt) and whisk it with a handheld milk frother until everything is silky smooth. Alternatively, you could just shake it vigorously in the tin. Then, just pour that silky froth gently over the top and you’ve got an Insta-worthy Beericano.
  • Beer-wise, what you use is ultimately up to you, but a light-bodied, hoppy style like a pilsner works well and won’t bring too much flavour to compete with the Campari and vermouth. Crisp, light lagers are great too – have a play with your favourite beers to see what you like best.
