Standard Drinks Look for the standard drink icons
  • Drinking affects different people in different ways. Your age, sex, weight and various other factors contribute to your ability to consume alcohol responsibly.
  • If you are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant you should consider not drinking alcohol at all.
  • The alcohol content of drinks is measured in units.
  • It's the strength and size of a drink that determines how many units it has.
  • The responsible way to keep track of your alcohol consumption is to count units.

Click here to see the general guideline on Standard Alcohol Content in different alcoholic beverages. However, you should always check the product label on the beverage you are consuming. This is a guide only, the effects of alcohol will vary from person to person.

Measure Safe Measure What You Drink!
  • Measuring spirit nips when pouring from a bottle is very important in drinking responsibly.
  • A 30ml spirit nip (40% alc/vol) is the equivalent of one standard drink.
  • Always refer to the alcohol volume percentage on the label. If the alcohol volume varies, it will affect the standard drink measure.
Party Guide

To be a responsible host you need to actively promote responsible consumption of alcohol:

  • Watch that those drinking alcohol do not over consume;
  • Suggest alternatives to alcohol;
  • Do not serve alcohol to people who have over consumed;
  • Ensure that all people drinking are of legal age.

Tips For Hosts
Assist party goers to keep check on how many drinks they have consumed by:

  • Not serving drinks in large containers (jugs, casks, flagons);
  • Let guests pour their own glasses;
  • Avoid serving home-mixed drinks, like cocktails or punch, where the alcohol content is not clearly evident to the person consuming;
  • Avoid games that promote the rapid or excessive consumption of alcohol; and
  • Encourage guests to monitor their drinking.

Provide non-alcoholic drinks
For those guests consuming alcohol, encourage them to alternate between non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.

Check out our Mocktails page for fun and creative alcohol free drinks.

Make food available
It is important to provide food and encourage guests to eat while drinking alcohol. Eating while drinking may slow down the rate of consumption and will affect the rate of absorbtion.

Provide safe transport
Ensure your guests have a safe way of getting home, either from a sober designated driver, a taxi service or other suitable public transport.

Click here to view public transport options for your state.

Dealing with over consumption
Have a plan of action if one of your guests becomes intoxicated. This will help you to minimise any risk to them and your other guests.

Notify The Police
Click here for the Victorian police site which allows you to register your party and provides information to help minimise the risk of things going wrong at your party, such as having intoxicated guests or gatecrashers ruining your fun.
